Re: Ubuntu 12.04
I upgraded and then kept having boot problems, so I downgraded again. Not sure what the problem was - maybe my laptop's just too old to handle it, or not fast enough or something.
I'm sticking with 11.10 until I get a new laptop I think.

Re: Kindle recommendations
Thanks everyone!
I'm going to have a look into the newspapers thing.
I've got an lcd screen ebook reader now, so I can read that in the dark :)
I'm not sure how the ordering from amazon works here yet - Last time I tried to download books to my phone it worked for a while...

Kindle recommendations
So...I'm getting a Kindle quite soon. Very excited about it!
I've got a chinese copy ebook reader but it's not e-ink, so I'm getting the kindle to play with it (and to get the free amazon books).
Any recommendations?

Re: For all you Linux fans ...
Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux!!
In my first two years here I 'lost' my laptop regularly to viruses.
Last summer, my laptop 'lost' windows, so my sister sent me a ubuntu USB stick. I've stuck with linux ever since. No viruses have hit and I haven't lost everything yet :)

Re: Badger cull debate
I sometimes wonder whether the fact that fox hunting has been all but banned has given certain people the idea that badger culling may just replace their favourite 'sport'.

People in apartment blocks who decide to get drumkits - and that 8am is a good time to practice at the weekend. At 10am they then have their friends come round with electric guitars, which they amp and turn the volume up on. They then decide to 'practice' the same 3 songs for the next 7 hours... Tha...

ooh I read the rest and for the tote bag for a boy idea: Make the bag without the handles and make a drawstring top. Put in a long string and attach it to the two bottom corners to make a backpacky type bag. I had one for my PE kit or swimming lessons when i was a kid. That would work for boys as we...

Re: More Herbalist Charletan Mumbo-Jumbo...
I know many people who swear by echinacea to prevent/shorten colds.
Couldn't bear the tea myself. It's so bitter!! I tried the drops in milk...but then was told that that wasn't such a good idea because milk is mucus forming, so it was cancelling out the echinacea.

for kids - clear M&P soap with a plastic goldfish in it packaged in a plastic bag (like they used to sell them at fairs) or clear M&P coloured blue set in a cupcake cup with a rubber duck on top. For babies - a quilt/wallhanging for the nursery, a fabric ball with ribbons sticking out from t...

when you make stews etc. save the liquid for stocks for soup/risottos later on.
I've got a couple of bags of stock waiting for the next use in the freezer.

So glad to hear that!! Does anyone know of anything I can give to doglet to repel ticks and fleas other than something like frontline? I've got one tube of frontline, but it has to be saved until she goes to the UK. She's got to be treated 24 hours before we leave here, so I'm keeping hold of it for...

Re: Banish Plastic
crickleymal that reminds me of packaging here - it's ridiculous!
I bought a tube of cadburys eclairs. They were in a cardboard tube...inside that was a roll covered in plastic...and then each individual eclair was wrapped in another plastic layer....and then in a paper layer!
Why?!!

They're brilliant! Thanks for sharing.
There was a study done recently that showed that looking at pictures of cute animals lowered stress levels and blood pressure. So I feel much healthier now too!
I loved the face of the first one - he looks so happy!
