Sorry for being a bit dense.... but how do you tell a male flower from a female flower  ? This might be why my pumpkin plants have lots of flowers but not a pumpkin in sight!

growing things inside & pollination

Good afternoon, and I hope it's as sunny where you are as it is here in Glasgow 8) I've been growing tomato & pepper plants inside as I don't have a green house and Glasgow weather is too unpredictable to put them outside. But someone asked me yesterday how they pollinate and I realised that may...

Thanks for all the advice everyone! Sounds like it's ok to keep on going with the polysterene and it won't poison me after all! I live in a tennament in Glasgow and we have a smallish yard with lots of tarmac and very little soil, so more or less everything is being grown in pots or in raised beds w...

Polystyrene as drainage

Hi all, I've been using broken bits of polystrene for drainage at the bottom of pots etc. I do this because: - I don't have enough stones - it's light - it seems a good way of reusing something that's pretty useless But I was wondering if this could in any way damage my plants. Are there any chemica...

Thanks so much Ina! I'll try and hunt down a local rhubarb grower next spring and see how I get on. Unfortunatly there doesn't seem to be (m)any veg growers in the tennemants I've seen (I'm in Glasgow) but maybe if I hang around the local allotments long enough someone will take pity on me and my rh...

Hi, this might be a stupid question, but I want to grow some rubarb and was wondering how to get some. I've looked around for seeds but haven't been able to find any in the shops. Someone mentioned earlier getting some roots from a neighbour - is this the best way to do it? What time of year should ...

Hi there, I'm afraid I can't advise on the chook attack or coming into the house (my parents have the same problem), but we've used dead bits of wood and sticks laid across the veg patch to stop the cats digging it up, along with some mesh wire laid across the seeded area with rocks on either side t...

I'm just about to be given a big barrel which I plan to use as a waterbutt. I've never used one before and I don't really want to start playing with our guttering (I live in a 1900s tennament and I don't think the other residents would appreciate me fiddling with the aging guttering!) - will it be e...
