Re: Disease-resistant heritage gooseberries?
I have hedgerows chock-a-block with gooseberries. They are wild I presume and I have no clue of their breed but they must be heritage as the house is 120 yrs old. They are a bit smaller than the usual 'bought' varieties, green and a bit hairier than most but taste great. They are resistant to diseas...

Glad to be back!
Hi Everybody, I'm back on the site after a few years away. I was living in Ireland and moved back to the UK for a couple of years but then I realised the grass wasn't greener and it's not how I remember it from 30 years ago when I was in the prime of my life, so I'm back in the middle of the bog and...

Glad to be back!
Hi All, It's a long time since I posted here. The last time I was living in Ireland and planning to move back to the UK. Well, we have finally moved, well twice actually. Moved back to a village outside Matlock in Derbyshire in December 2013 and moved again to a house with a bigger garden in Novembe...

Eating fresh pineapple helps to clear mouth ulcers, it's the bromelaine in it that does the business.

How very sexist of you Digger!...I'm a fella, not a woman! Not sure of your fancy ways up there in the North Wesht but down here in the bog we do sometimes substitute tea for coffee in the name of good health.

Whatever happened to the traditional 'whore's breakfast'? ...two fags and a cup of coffee. Works for me!

Re: Horse Burgers anyone?
Like I said in the OP, I know people do eat horse and that's fine if that's what you choose to eat. Personally I don't eat horse and have no wish to. If I buy meat that is labelled as beef then that's exactly what I expect to get. The Govt has announced that there is no health threat from this meat ...

Re: Horse Burgers anyone?
Yep, I have a mincer and I'll certainly be doing that but what if the prime beef steak is rump of horse?
I don't know what horse meat looks like, so how do I know if it's beef or horse?

Horse Burgers anyone?
Today I am traumatised. Truly. On the Irish news today it was announced that our 'beefburgers' contain up to 30% horse meat. I've calmed down a bit since I heard it on the 6pm news but gawd it's bloody awful. I don't buy ready made burgers but I do buy minced 'beef' and make my own. I wonder now if ...

Re: What do you heat your home with and what does it cost??
We live in a fairly large old stone farmhouse. There is a solid fuel range in the dining room (was a kitchen many moons ago). The range is connected to the rads and hot water tank. We burn peat briquettes and wood in that. We use one bale of briquettes a day, which cost us €3.30 each and mix it with...

Re: How do I make a non-stick pan, non-stick again?
Thanks all for the info. The pan I have is a good heavy one, not sure if it's cast iron or not. It is a Wedgewood pan that T3Sco had a special offer on about 10 years ago. Oldjerry, your method is the one I remember now. Thanks for jogging the memory, I'll try that and see how I get on. The little b...

I like to think of man-flu as our retaliation for having to put up with PMT. Women get PMT but it's the men who suffer with it!

How do I make a non-stick pan, non-stick again?
I have a non-stick frying pan that has lost its coating. It is now very much a sticky pan. I remember hearing somewhere, sometime about a way you could make them non-stick again. I seem to remember that salt was involved in some way but I can't remember the details  . Can anybody help me ou...

Re: Self sufficientish Toilet Paper
£91 for a few rolls of Izal!!! The only explanation must be that they are into some kind of masochism. I can think of no other legitimate use for that stuff. Makes me clench up just thinking about it. Of course my Nan never did explain about the scrunching of the paper prior to contact. If she had t...

Re: Self sufficientish Toilet Paper
I happened to be lurking around the toilet paper (or bathroom tissue if you want to be very PC) section of the supermarket the other day. Yes, I know I'm sad but hey! Anyhoo, I noticed they are now doing buttered toilet paper. Yes, BUTTERED with shea butter (whatever a shea might be...don't have the...
