Hi MelNAustin, the book I learnt to sew, and knit, and crochet with is "The Good Housekeeping Step-by-Step Encyclopaedia of Needlecraft" by Judy Brittain. It's out of print, but if you can find it in a library or a charity shop it's well worth getting hold of. It's very clear and describes...

Unfortunately I can't remember the variety, but I'm sure they weren't supposed to be that big! (none were quite 2m, but some came close)

It is sad that there are so many paved/tarmac/gravel gardens, but you're right Andy that most tenants wouldn't touch them. I had one landlord at uni who let us do what we wanted with the garden though, grew some tree sized curly kale among other things, but it was hard work fighting off the rats... ...
