Re: Growing Veggies in Dry Areas
It seems like the climate has been changing here, but now that I look at the data things may not be as bad as I thought. Last year we had about one month without rain broken followed by several small periods of rain and then three weeks without rain. A month dry is very different from 2.5 dry month...

Re: Can Turkeys Run with Chooks?
I've read the same. Never kept turks, so I can't confirm. Although at the local farm they have the two running in adjacent runs (not together.)

Re: Growing Veggies in Dry Areas
I am next to a creek, but since I am in the middle of a city, the water quality is questionable. If you're in the middle of a city, the air quality will likely be poor too, which would be more of a concern for me. As for the water, maybe look into reed-bed systems to clean it up. There are special ...

Re: Growing Veggies in Dry Areas
Add loads of charcoal to your soil, capture what rain you can, and mulch heavily. Swales work, but they won't see you through more than an extra couple of weeks. Permaculture won't help you much, other than to tell you to plant elsewhere (nearer water). The forest garden idea only works where water ...

Re: government sponsored green con ??
this is exactly the problem we have, every single penny in our wallets is dependant on the debts of someone else. wipe out all debt you effectively wipe out all money. I must confess to not understanding this. I've read it several times from several sources, and I've watched that Money is Debt film...

Re: government sponsored green con ??
Let's face it - the ONLY reason this is being done is so that the government can be seen to be attempting to meet their carbon commitments. Heaven forbid that they should do this the easy way and tackle industrial output and the Great God CAR. No, as usual, the private individual will end up paying...

Pour it on a patch of your veg plot, wait until it rains a bit, then plant florence fennel there.

Re: Polytunnel
I know several people who've made their own polytunnel based on these instructions.... http://www.overthegardengate.net/UserPages/pp_view.asp?FName=polytunnel&Page=1 ....and are very happy with how robust they are, even in spots with strong winds. In fact, having drawn a blank on buying a frame,...

Re: How Much Land to Support One Person?
Standard UK allotment plots were sized to feed a family of four for a year - fruit & veg. So 5 acres? Nah. 1 acre? Nah. Nowadays, I think the average UK allotment is 300 square yards, but you might want to look back to WWII records to check, as there's been a lot of splitting going on which woul...

Re: Problems with the new FiTs scheme
The new FIT`s scheme is no doubt flawed and skewed but whatever its merits it seems to me deeply unfair (as guy has pointed out) that people utilising old or refurbished equipment (surely the very signature of any green movement) will be disqualified from a fair reward for their efforts. In fact, a...

Re: Problems with the new FiTs scheme
Could you expand on that? Firstly, how has the EU had any input into the scheme? AFAIK, that cock-up is the sole responsibility of the UK government. Secondly, the whole scheme will be funded by an increasing levy on electricity bills. i.e. it will not effect shareholder profits - it gets paid for ...

Re: Problems with the new FiTs scheme
but that's not stopping you generating leccy for your own use is it ?? - just selling any surplus , and i smell the deft hand of the accursed EU bureaucracy here some where + of course the power companies REALLY don't want people generating their own and then daring to expect THEM to buy it - oh no...

Re: Powercuts and renewable energy in uk
You want the grid-tied power generator to shutdown in an outage because they (power company) can't charge you correctly, did I get that right? :D Well, there is that, but I think the main reason is that an engineer working to restore power could get electrocuted by power fed into an otherwise inact...

Re: central heating and domestic hot water from a wood stove?
We have two Clearview stoves which are excellent and the Company, which is based in Ludlow, are really really helpful and definitely worth a call for a chat. However, a word of caution take a serious look into the Building Regulations reference chimneys/flues as we've discovered that if the flue is...
