Walk your Dog in the Yorkshire Dales!

I have just had my first book published, its: http://www.thevga.co.uk/misc/book_cover.jpg I spend most of last year walking round the Dales, testing out lots of routes that would be good for Dogs (and their owners). Thats my dog (Charlie) as my avatar - he's a bit older now but just as lively. The w...

Too late for another pea sowing?

First sowings are finished and I was wondering if I could get another crop going?
If so what variety would be useful?

Re: Our first solar power kit!

Just a thought, (sorry if i'm stating the obvious) but as long as the solar panel is not shaded by anything it does not have to be high up (the suns rays have already travelled 150km so a few more feet to the ground won't matter). Does not have to be above/on top of the greenhouse - where it will un...

Re: Stupid, stupid people......

I bet if you asked people if there was any connection between flowers and fruit 90% would have no idea.

Sad how disconnected we have become from the 'natural' world.

Re: What are you havesting

Finished early spuds (Rocket and Swift) - stroring them for use over the next few weeks. Lots of mangetout (Norli) - a big crop this year and really tasty. Celtuce - not grown this before and its a bit of a winner - I did plant them too close together though, not realising how big they grow. Eating ...

Re: Grow anything remotely edible when I have no garden?

You can get dwarf tomoatoes that grow well in cool/low light situations - we have MicroTom (among others) over here. Just a small pot (less than 6ins diameter) on a windowsill for small, tasty toms - if you stagger the sowing (start 3 seeds in a pot every 8 weeks-thin to strongest plant) you can get...

Re: Broad beans

My favourite crop - mostly reliable and comes early in the year. This year they did seem to flower earlier than usual when the plants were relatively small - but looks like a good crop (ready this weekend I hope)> Did anyone see Monty Don recently on GW saying you should peel skin off each bean? Unl...

Open Gardens Walk - Otley West Yorks

This sunday 26th June The Home Grown community gardening group is holding an Open Gardens afternoon as part of the Otley Walking Festival. Either phone 01943 468 664 or pm me to book on a guided walk around a number of gardens in Otley - see how 'ordinary' gardens are being used to grow stuff to eat...

Have you grown Okra?

I really want to grow this (my partner loves it).

I have done it twice but they failed - germinated fine but then could only manage 1 leaf or flower at a time - everytime a new leaf grows, others curl up and drop off).

Any tips?

Re: growing herbs for teas

I've always found Comfrey tea to be a great way of clearing a lingering chesty cough-not a strong taste and nice with a bit of honey.

Re: grow potatoes in pots

The trouble with pots/planters is what to put in them - not what to grow in them but what are you going to use to fill them up with? I got myself 4 spud grow bags + seed potatoes as a 'kit' for £19.99 and then spent the same again on compost :( I think each spud on my plate cost me at least £3! Hope...
