Re: In an emergency......

For Lighting we have candles, wind up lanterns, electric lanterns (5-9 hour life) and a gas lantern with a few spare canisters...we also have some battery powered emergency lights stuck around the walls of the house for that initial phase of "where's my torch?" - a few snaplights too... He...

Re: Clean Energy - Renewable vs Nuclear....

Great debate folks - some very informed views. I haven't been on for ages and came on seeking advice on growing garlic - but saw this and working in the nuclear industry (yes I confess - again) -couldn't resist posting here. In terms of energy supply in the UK we need a combination - I like renewabl...

While I am a great supporter of energy efficiency and localised green energy generation... I have to say I found the Greenpeace video pretty sick, irresponsible - as well as factually innaccurate in its implication. While I think Greenpeace do some good work (particularly on wildlife issues) - they ...

The other device is "windsave" at www.windsave.com , I have been following swift and windsave devices to decide which one I may want myself - when I can afford it. The windsave device is only 1kw but comes with all the kit to interface with home power supply and appears to be £500 cheap...

I'll get the camcorder out and see if it helps (if not watch out for Kevin and Perry 2...) Guess I could be jealous of the progress...I get a bit frustrated with the weather, my lack of time ('cos I work for a living), and then am fixing / preparing rather than doing (finishing a garage/worksh...

Well I enjoyed the first episode a lot - though clearly it was not on the cheap - and I wish my kids and friends were half as enthusiastic to help (...think Kevin the teenager x2). My 2 year old and jack russell are very enthusiastic... The second one was...well... disappointing. No real substance, ...

Hi

Hi Nev & Stew Well the NDA website is mostly true  Apologies for being presumptive. There area number of stages to decommissioning, the end point is either delicensing completely or just a store of some sort. I was at Winfrith last week -and yes - within two years - most of the nasties wil...

Doh !

Greetings Do you lot believe everything you read in the press? and then some !! The reality is that Dounreay comprises of a number of small to large experimental reactors using quite novel techniques, the last of these was shut off in the early 1990's. There are also a number of old facilities which...

Dead cockerel?

Hi, Acquired a new cockerel to keep the ladies company about a month ago. He was very good, keeping the hens under control and not too protective with us - all in all a nice healthy fella (the last one was greedy and attacked everything - he tasted nice though  ). It's been a beautiful day here...

Do you have much experience with pressure equipment Mick? Practical hands on experience...no. I am a professional mechanical engineer, who works in Safety Health and Environment these days. So I guess that means I know what I don't know and I'm familiar with the hazards of steam and the potential o...

Hugh Piggott's book "Windpower Workshop" is pretty good.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASI ... 08-3567825

Hugh's website http://www.scoraigwind.com as mentioned by muddypause has lots of info too.

Seems to fit the bill.

Hi all, Thanks for the welcome muddypause. I agree with a lot of what you said but I still think nuclear power stations will be built - its a matter of when. You might be 100% against (as I guess many people are) but I still don't see a real national alternative....I think the negatives you quote ar...

I'm new here and going through the darker corners of the forum came across this.....and just have to comment - sorry - I know its old. We in the UK have a backward energy policy, oil is running out, gas is running out - such that we are looking to import the stuff via a long russian pipeline. Our nu...

Hello from the far north.....

Greetings from sunny Caithness (about 5 hrs drive north of Aberdeen), Good website, now becoming a regular source of advice... Lived in the north for over two years, lived in a wee house in Berkshire, now have a rather larger place in 4 acres up here. Um...now acquired chickens, mad jack russell, ol...
