Re: Rabbit/Goat food

Has your supplier also run out of alfalfa cubes? The big square ones fed to horses and cows? Our bunnies get those when they are out of the smaller pellets. You can also just feed them alfalfa hay, if you can get it as hay. The bunnies here get a lot of forage, but I don't know what climate you're i...

Re: Loose Rabbit fur

It could be all sorts of things. Rabbits do molt, so it could just be hair naturally falling off. They occasionally molt in big patches and have bare spots, but those will fill in pretty quick. If you suspect wool mites or ear mites, a bit of Ivermectin in almost any way you can get it on or in the ...

Re: Learn how to forage for wild food?

If you know anyone who forages, ask if you can go along. Each geographic location will have it's own things to forage and a book may not cover all the ones in your area. But at least a book is a place to start.

http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-966-LECITHIN.aspx?activeIngredientId=966&activeIngredientName=LECITHIN Our local health food store sells lecithin granules which are pretty inexpensive. They can be sprinkled on cereals or added to salads or just eaten as a spoonful of the...

Re: New Project :-)

Here's a link from the University at Texas which has loads of good information on hatching almost any kind of egg. http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/organic/files/2011/02/Lee-Cartwright-Incubating-and-hatching-eggs.pdf Hatch loads of them and sell them to make money for the school. Hens are good fo...

Re: Do you grow animal or chicken food

There is a lot of foliage around the yard for the bunnies to eat, some of which was planted specifically for them. Ti leaves, banana leaves (we eat the bananas), coconuts, (bunnies adore coconut although we eat them, too), citrus leaves as well as extra citrus, carrot tops, assorted grasses, etc. I'...

Re: Chickens eating their own eggs

We've only the three hens, but if their nest box is full of dried grass they don't eat the eggs. If the nest box is bare, then they eat the eggs. Haven't a clue why. Is your nest box full of straw?

http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html That has a lot of different chicken breeds sorted by all sorts of things, although taste isn't one of them unfortunately. Perhaps you could start a page like that with taste added in? You can take Silkies off your list of tasty birds. They h...

Re: Daughter wants a bunny.

We keep angora rabbits for their fiber and sell the occasional bunny to folks looking to start a bunny herd of their own or to have a pet that provides fiber for yarn. Over the years the biggest predator of the bunnies that have been sold has been dogs. IMHO, chicken wire isn't going to slow down a ...

Re: set up the best website for my crafts?

what GeorgeSalt showed you was the line of computer code that sends folks to your shop, which in this case is "folksy.com/shops/sweetheart". However that isn't a very attractive line of text nor does it have an automatic link where you can click on it to go there. He added a bit of code wh...

Re: washing line

The picture in the first link didn't show up so I can't answer precisely, but a load of laundry on a line is really heavy. One pulley isn't gonna do much you may need a block and tackle with four or more strands of line going between the two. You'll also need sturdy poles and something secure to anc...

- limited rules and goverment (I want to live off the grid without have to worry about rules about building you own house or rules about having animals or having to pay taxes and so on..) - cheap price for land All of the requirements except the last two are easy enough to locate. Perhaps you could...

Re: Create a self sufficient community

Basically, the OP has TWO problems, not just one. Creating a community is a difficulty all in itself. Adding in that it be self sufficient is an added layer of complexity. Usually to build a community you need some sort of common purpose. Religion, employment, some sort of passionate hobby, etc., wi...

Re: Keeping Wild Boar

Most of the boar around here are just feral pigs, I'd guess. They are black and hairy and have tusks, though, so maybe they are true boar. They are pretty tasty, especially during guava or avocado season when they are eating fallen fruit. Around here the sows are considered much tastier than the boa...

Re: Rabbit ear mites. Natural remedies

I don't think either honey or olive oil is gonna do much, but I suppose you could give it a try. We use ivermectin paste which is actually supposed to be a horse medicine but we just put a tiny dab in the rabbit's ears. These are angora rabbits, though, so we aren't planning on eating them. I wonder...
