Re: Make a bread oven off the ground?

Yes I've looked at that idea too and may very well go with that method. I always find it pleasing to bend a hazel or willow stick only to find it forms the ideal shape for an oven, almost enough to make me think something is actually guiding this universe

"Grey water"

When we had a water meter installed I of course looked at ways to save on water usage. One of the most obvious was to use rainwater to flush the toilet. However, time being tight and having a million and one other jobs to do I didn't plumb anything in but did install a barrel to catch the water. It ...

Re: Shooters can't shoot if they have nothing to shoot with

If America wanted to stop it's citizens carrying guns then legally it wouldn't be a problem although politically it would be suicide (if not assingnation). I remember Alistar Cooke talking about this years ago on his "Letter from America" programme on radio 4 , showing my age on that one. ...

Re: Make a bread oven off the ground?

Thanks for the reply, interesting. Fee fairy and I also have the problem of making the thing to look authentic. We based ours on an illustration that appears to have been copied a few times but in all versions show basically the same details. I'd post a link but as a margo I don't think I'm allowed ...

Re: Make a bread oven off the ground?

Vermiculite would indeed make it lighter but unfortunately it won't act as a heat sink. These ovens really do rely on mass to hold the heat. We conducted a very simple experiment with our oven by cooking in it with about half of the bricks removed and found that it's efficiency was a lot less and to...

Re: Make a bread oven off the ground?

So...I'm a medieval re-enactor Me too, and have done just what you are thinking of. There are a few ovens on the scene and whilist ours isn't the prettiest it does work unlike some of the smaller ones that are based on a larger curfew. There are a number of problems with these ovens or at least pro...

Re: Freecycle (love it)

I use it myself both giving and receiving. Recently my wife said that someone had an old Voigtlander camera on freecycle and was I interested (I've got a small collection of old cameras)? Yes I said and arriving home that evening was an absolute mint camera still in it's box , never used and still w...

So what else are you up to self suff wise? I'm not going to claim to be self sufficient by any stretch of the imagination but failing there being a www, selfreliantish site this forum ticks enough boxes. My Grandfather was a smallholder although that went when he died , something to do with there no...

Re: What have you found lately?

As I mentioned in my introduction my user name stems from my affinity with skips or rather their contents a trait I inherited from my father. He was a furnace controller for the local council and came home most nights with a car full of goodies that had been dumped. It never ceased to amaze me the s...

New member , hello

Walking my daughter to school we go across a small field and all around the edge is a thick band of nettles. Now I've eaten nettles in the past but this time thought , hmm , nettle beer but where did I put the recipe? Google it I thought which is just what I did and whilist searching found your foru...
