Re: Rats in the Chook house

Rats (and mice) in the chook house is always a problem here. I had a couple of rats last week, one had taken bait and was dead, the other was very much alive in a bag of shredded paper I use for nest boxes. I stamped on the bag in my size 9 boots until it stopped moving. In the past I got three mice...

Onion help

I've been growing onions from seed in my poly the last two years - they seem to get going well, but the tops don't seem to flop over and die back the way I would expect in autumn. By the time I've decided they are not going to and have lifted them, the outside layers of the onion are starting to mil...

Re: What causes lots of small poatoes?

Well it's a good thought. But these were King Edwards. At least they were supposed to be.

On the other hand we had reserved seed potato from the previous year's crop, so there's always room for error (but we''ve not grown and salad varieties yet).

Thanks for all the thoughts & advice.

Re: What causes lots of small poatoes?

Thanks everyone. We are always dry in the summer, but having dug a new spring just for the garden this year it's not so bad as it has been so I'm leaning away from that one. Lack of nutrients is also a perenniel problem (peaty soil), we heaped on the manure last winter which I would have hoped would...

What causes lots of small poatoes?

Can anyone give me any ideas as to why some of my potato plants have produced lots of small potatoes and no larger ones? Variety? Weather? Soil? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Re: First life of 2012 - What are you sowing?

All this talk of sewing makes me realise I need to think about next season's seeds soon. Tomorrow I'll be sewing mizuna which is the last thing I'm planning for this year....( until spring, I'm in the Southern hemisphere). Still, we're currently in full harvest season so I can't complain too much.
