Cheers Zoe, glad to hear of your success.
Nothing else has worked so far so I'll give it a go.

Re: Chickens breaking eggs
Nest box darkened with a curtain, chicks took a while to figure it out but now found their way back in. Also trying to add to and vary their diet some more. Have also resorted to nuclear tactics of mustard filled eggs... Cue explosion of incensed clucking and much excitement in the hen house ...

Re: Chickens breaking eggs
Thanks guys.
Going to have a crack at making the nesting area darker as well as the mustard filled egg.
Bumping them off is probably a bit extreme and not sure I'm up to trimming the beaks!
Fingers crossed that we can break the habit!

Chickens breaking eggs
Hi there all, am looking for some advice from the chicken owning contingent out there... We have had 3 ex battery hens for the past 8 months or so. Up until recently we have been getting a fairly decent supply of eggs from them with no real issues. The last week or two though we have been finding th...

Re: Get the best out of our veg patch
Thanks all, some good stuff there. :thumbright: I like the idea of 'vertical growth' and defintely will consider more along those lines. Also considerations of relative cost in the shops is a very good point and probably it is worth focusing on what we love and what costs the most rather than stacks...

Get the best out of our veg patch
We are just coming to the end of a year of our veg patch with some notable successes (tomatoes, sugar snaps, runner beans, chillies), some other items have not gone so well (peppers, courgettes, aubergines, garlic). We are in the process of deciding what to experiment with for the next 12 months and...

Re: survive on a very tight budget
I think you're on to the right lines with the beef skirt. Make friends with your local butcher, while some things will be more expensive than the supermarket the choice will be wider and the advice better. Look at getting some lesser used cuts (such as the skirt) and making the best of them (a lot o...

Re: how do I become self sufficient...
Great advice to start with cooking and bread is great fun and cheap to play with. However, you mention in your earlier post that an inspiration for you was the "now with real cheese" label (the mind boggles! :pale: ). What about starting with your own versions of the foods that you have be...

Hi from Southampton
Hello all, stumbled across the site from Google and stayed for a while! I'm a chef from Southampton with (obviously) a healthy interest in food and the production of it. I own a small terraced house with my girlfriend and we have started down the selfsufficientish road with planting some veggies and...
