thanks - I don't suppose there is a list anywhere of things that require specialist recycling or that can't be recycled ??? just to help a bit ?? I've noticed that each local authority seems to accept different things for recycling - perhaps it's best to contact the section that deals with waste &a...

I have 2 very determined cats who have dried food in the morning (some stuff to help keep their kidneys functioning OK and to help prevent hairballs - they are both long haired) because that doesn't get smelly in the hot summer days (remember those?) and I have tried oh so many times to keep them on...

I was working at the geek end of retail when loyalty cards were introduced and, yes, the information gathered is certainly used to create a profile of you (so you get offers to entice to you buy more & other products) and a pattern of how you shop. But even if you don't have a loyalty card your ...

Have I missed something here? Is it just Tescos or is it all of the "big 5" supermarkets that are the bad boys ? I don't shop at Tescos because others are more handy, and what little shopping I do at a supermarket I try to fulfill my shopping list with organic, fairly traded and local prod...

I'd be up for that - I keep my non-recyclable rubbish to a minimum as it is and would love to hear how I could reduce that even further.

I've been using them and although the clothes smell clean the lighter ones look grubby.
I've decided that a compromise here is to wash the dark clothes with the eco balls and the light items with ecover tablets

Thanks for all your suggestions so far. After googling things like "Warm Roof System" & "insulate flat roof" I'm beginning to wonder about waiting until the roof needs repairing - it is at least 20 yrs old and although is not showing signs of its age I guess it will begin to ...

Flat roof insulation

I have a flat roof over an extension, and the 2 rooms (each about 9ft square - one of them leading open plan onto a room in the original house) under this roof are COLD !!! The only information I can find on insulating a flat roof says it's best done if the roof is being replaced, but mine isn't. Ca...

Thanks for all your comments - I had been uising the juice on plants, based on the info that came with my can-o-worms from wigglywigglers and the junior wormery that I started with. Then suddenly I read the comment in "composting with worms" and wondered what experience others have had. I ...

Worm tea?

When I started using my wormery I rather looked forward to using the juice that comes out at the bottom to give my garden a treat. But in the book "Composting with worms" this is discouraged because the juice contains things not fully digested/processed that you'd not want to introduce to ...

"Champion of nettles faces sting"

Given my reaction to this article in Saturday's Time I wasn't sure if this should go under "fruit and nuts" but I guess it really goes here. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,13509-2359956.html Let's just hope that the French Food Safety Agency rulings don't make it over the water. :...

Well, the response so far from the supermarkets that I wrote to is that it is about 80% more expensive to use an alternative to whatever they currently use in their bags, so they won't be replacing them. So it really is a matter of encouraging everyone no to use them - and to continue to lead by exa...

I've been using eco-balls for nearly 5 months and am satisfied with the results, although this may be a bit un representative of many households as I don't wash clothes for children and I have a desk job so my eco-balls are rarely challenged!! It took me a a couple of washes to work out how to be qu...
