The Japanese onions and garlic are good ideas, if you don't mind them taking up the space in the soil until next summer. For something just for the winter, you could try new potatoes. Oh boo. This is just the kind of thing I have been looking for buuut I have a baby due like, now- so travelling too far out of Bristol will prob be a no no :( .
