Re: Kitchen scraps in compost bins

The best strategy is to put some wire mesh under the bins. This will allow the worms in but prevent anything bigger. Second the comment about no meat and bones.

Re: First bread maker

I use a 50/50 mix of wholemeal and malthouse which makes a lighter loaf. Also try adding a teaspoon of mixed herbs and some finely chopped sun dried tomatoes which is great toasted with scrambled egg on top.

Re: Define your alternative self

I've always been a hippy at heart and used to have the long hair and beard to go with it. I have always enjoyed the outdoors life and used to like touring on my motorcycle and camping and cooking outdoors. Now prefer to stay home and study ecology, politics and environmental issues. I still like coo...

Re: Where do all the alternative people hang out?

There is quite a lot of alternative stuff going on in Wiltshire these days. Here are a few examples. The Lamb in Devizes hosts both a Folk Club and Amnesty International meetings. It also has live music Friday nights. So does the Bear Hotel. Sustainable Devizes is trying to re boot itself, possibly ...

Re: Dishwashers v Hand washing

I wash by hand and don't rinse but dry with a tea towel. I also use an eco washing up liquid.
If you look at the embodied energy of the dishwasher then hand washing has to be far more environmentally friendly.

So sorry to hear your sad news. Never an easy thing to deal with. Take solace that you managed to get to spend time recently with her and remember the good times.

Re: Glyphosate Watering Can

I am fighting horsetail by painting glyphosphate with a brush rather than spraying. I also use 1 pint plastic milk containers with a hole in the lid to thread bindweed though. This works pretty well but I do have quite a few dotted around the garden.
