Might depend on why you are mulching ... here (Australia), the purpose is mainly to prevent moisture loss through evaporation & cool the roots. But I'm guessing, as you're going into winter, your purpose is somewhat different? Usually here people recommend waiting until the soil warms up a bit b...

Hmm, maybe it would be worthwhile putting together a fact sheet on organic composts, teas etc & getting someone to translate it into French. It is a real worry when people risk jail for disseminating useful information. But at least with the Internet, others may be able to help store/promote the...

Hmm, I've been wondering whether I'd like a fig tree, in a pot.

I came across this recipe for 'whitewash' to paint on fig trunks ... thought you might be interested. From the ABC, sorta like the BBC:

Cuppa anyone? (tea or coffee?)

Has anyone grown tea (camellia sinensis) or coffee (arabica)? I'm a cup or 2 of tea a day person, but probably drink less coffee. D'you know how many plants I'd need to be selfsufficientISH? I've heard coffee is quite hard to prepare yourself, but as I live near some 'boutique coffee roasters' I tho...

TV program: aquaponics, fish & veggies

Just watched a really interesting TV program on Gardening Australia (ABC TV, like BBC). Basically, the fish wastes provide nutrients for the plants/veggies and the veggies clean the water for the fish. Neat system, I reckon!! Supposed to be pretty easy to setup from materials found in your local har...

yellow beans?

My climbing beans in a pot are just starting to come up, and the first/seed leaves look really yellow, I mean all over yellow, not just veins ... What do you reckon: (a) don't worry yet (easy!)? (b) hope it rains less (or that the rain moves over to the catchment area)? (c) test to see if the soil r...

Cool theory!!!! My German lecturer was writing a paper on where the Aussie accent came from, and he reckoned it was a mixture of UK regional accents, mixed according to the proportions of early UK convicts/settlers that came from those regions. But goodness knows, the flies in the mouth theory could...

Mmmm, yep, a macadamia tree would be beautiful .. but I think they grow 10 meters or more. Maybe someone will breed a dwalf macadamia oneday? I don't think there's been much work on breeding / selecting cultivars for Australian nuts & fruits (except macadamias, but that was in Hawaii & perha...
