Re: Destination Nepal - ideas welcomed.
I wasn't having a go and i didn't call you anything. It was a genuine suggestion and something i've been meaning to do to offset some of my past flights. Your beligerent and hostile reply has really got to me though so do what you want! (please note that it has taken a lot of self-control not to rep...

Re: Destination Nepal - ideas welcomed.
Hmm, if you're flying over there perhaps you could figure out how much carbon will be released into the atmosphere because of your trip and attempt to offset it by planting however many acres or hectares of forest that are necessary to mop it up?

Re: Grapefruit wine
Thanks for the replies. It's 1am and I haven't been able to sleep so i thought I'd get on to some brewing. Mike suggested half a litre of grapefruit juice per gallon whereas Frozen suggested 1.5litres per gallon so I ended up sticking about 1.5ish litres into what will be 2 gallons of wine. Unfortun...

Grapefruit wine
Greetings once again! "A friend" of mine recently ninjad over a 10ft fence covered with barbed wire into the bin area of a certain souless, multinational supermarket behemoth. In one bin he found lots and lots of grapefruit (60 or so!). He is not one of those strange people who actually ea...

How much sugar??
Greetings ishers! Some of you might remember last year when I asked what to do about some cider I had added too much sugar to...Well, I let it ferment and it became an incredibly strong but still sweet apple wine. I entered it as such in a local brewing competition and won 2nd place! (These people m...

Re: Spots on tomato leaves
If it is blight you want to destroy it asap before it spreads to your spuds if you have any. I found blight on some spuds i'm growing separately from my main crop today. Harvested the spuds and then annihilated the remaining plant bits with some petrol :angryfire: ..Fingers crossed as i planted a ri...

Re: Old tyres (big)
Are you gonna be growing food in them?? I have absolutely no scientific evidence to base this on but I'd be a bit uneasy about nasties from the tyres being absorbed by the soil....Again, no evidence just blind speculation/paranoia

I hate to be crude, but have you thought about pissing on it?? Urine is great for activating compost and you'll save on water, too. Interesting bbc article here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/camb ... 357134.stm

Broad bean issues
Hi, Attached is a photo of my broad bean plants. They're heirloom aquadulce and I planted them last autumn. They survived the winter and have already produced some broad beans. There are a few issues i'd like to resolve though... Firstly, will it be possible to plant some of this year's crop immedia...

Re: Chickens and gardens?
You might want to look at getting some bantams. They're half the size of normal hens but i'd estimate they cause only a tenth of the damage of a full size hen. A quarter acre lawn should remain intact with a wee flock of bantams. Obviously you'll get smaller eggs and (unlike full sized hybrids) they...

Re: Home-grown pig food
A fella i used to know in france used to raid supermarket bins. Most of the food he found was good enough for human consumption but a lot was genuinly mouldy and only good enough for his pigs. He also used to collect scraps from local restaurants in exchange for a cheeky bit of bacon come slaughter ...

Thanks for your sympathy. Hopefully it's not Marek, DarkBrownEggs. Nobody will want to eat my eggs if one of my birds had a herpes related virus! Guess I'll never know how Mrs Weasley died....x

Re: Backyard Aquaculture (fish farming)
Inspirational stuff! Sadly I dont have the time for such an awesome project at the moment but perhaps i'll get round to it this summer. Have you thought of closing the loop and maybe producing your own fishfood (perhaps a massive wormery?)? Again, excellent thread!
