Re: Emotional side of hunting, and some practical questions
So a consensus is that meat rabbits might be a good idea? Thank you Big Al, for the link on rabbit keeping and the one on ferretting. No, seeing the kill doesn't worry me, actually their distress in the net bothers me more than the kill itself. As I said, intellectually I can cope fine with the idea...

Emotional side of hunting, and some practical questions
I eat meat, and I also have three dogs who eat a prey-model raw meat diet. Intellectually I came to the conclusion (easily and ages ago) that the most humane way to go about being an omnivore is either buying top quality free-range etc meat, which I do for myself though I can't afford to buy free ra...

Re: Advice please, dog got chicken. x
Delurking again timidly to add to the chorus of "Don't worry too much she'll probably be fine." My FIL's chickens get retrieved whenever they jump the fence of their pen, always unharmed - FIL until recently had two working springers (still got one plus two pointers), with very soft mouths...

Re: Desperate for a Dog
But they're not used to 24-7 human company? The OP could rehome a dog and a bitch, and play a radio while she's gone. I admit I don't know that much about greyhounds - toy breeds and gundogs are my forté, with a smattering of giant breeds and working dogs - but I've always been told they were one of...

Re: Desperate for a Dog
It's great that you're putting the dog first. A lot of people don't, and the fact you are indicates you'll be a great owner.
Cuddly isn't what springs to mind when you say PJR tbh. You'd want more a toy breed for that I reckon. You have a PM.

Re: Desperate for a Dog
I hope I'm allowed to post a link. If not, I apologise. Try http://www.dogsblog.com/category/jack-russell-terrier/ . There're so many dogs in rescue at the moment due to the recession, and Jack Russels can be a real handful so end up in rescue more than some other breeds. 10.5 hours alone a day is f...

Re: Blueberries and blackberries
So if I throw in the two cooking apples the jam should set? Cool. Re.: ripeness, the blackberries out and about aren't ripe yet, but the majority of ones in my garden are. Must be because they're in a sheltered spot I guess.

Blueberries and blackberries
I had my very first blueberry from a few year old plant a couple of days ago! It was lovely and sweet. It seems to have been the only one on there, so fingers crossed for a bigger crop next year. I have more blackberries than I know what to do with, though. Would I be alright making jam with them, a...

Re: A little bit pregnant...
I'm afraid I've been absent from Selfsufficientish for a while because first my morning sickness was horrendoius, and then I found out I've had a missed miscarriage. I'm still waiting for nature to take its course, and I hope to join in a bit more on the boards by way of distraction. Thank you all f...

Of course my plans are just plans, nothing's set in stone. But it's fun planning! Thanks for the wellwishes, and I will take your advice on board.

A little bit pregnant...
Hey everyone, I've just found out I'm expecting! I'm only 4 weeks and some odd days, so really really early days, but I'm already planning! It's come as something of a surprise, because although DH and I were planning a pregnancy, we weren't exactly trying, more not trying not to lol, and not expect...

Re: What to have at the end of the garden?
Rabbits? Oh no, I couldn't bring myself to eat our own animals yet. Intellectually, the idea is fine with me, it's got to be better to know where your meat comes from and how it's been treated it's whole life, but... not sure I could bring myself to do the deed. Any hints on getting to a place where...

Re: Blanched dandelion leaves
I tried dandelion leaves in a salad a little while ago for the first time, and like them. OH had some on a sandwich, and liked them because I didn't tell him what they are - he's a bit of a wimp about trying things I've foraged.

Re: What to have at the end of the garden?
My Mom has two ex-batts left (from an original 13), and with just the two of them they're quiet enough. I was wondering more what my other options are. In that space would three ex-batts be reasonable? Any other ideas? Quail maybe? Quail and ex-batts?
