Experiences of planners in Sussex?
Hi all, I'm trying to buy some land and live on it and was wondering if anyone out there has any experience of the various planning depts in the different borough and district councils in Sussex, particularly mid and east Sussex, as it would be good to know if any were known to be relatively sympath...

Re: Abel and Cole
We've had boxes from A&C on and off for 10 years or so and always found them very good. Not used their scheme though, sorry.

Re: Laundry balls
I've tried 'eco balls' and soapnuts and wasn't very impressed with either. Tbh, I found it equally effective using just water as using the eco balls, and although the soapnuts did seem to clean a bit more than that, I really disliked the smell they have. I know that's a trvial and personal thing but...

Re: Home ed forums
There's a very active Home ed board on the forums of the Green Parent magazine: http://www.thegreenparent.co.uk/forums if you're looking for more electronic company. Other than that, I've found the various local and national yahoo lists to be more active. We home ed our 7 and 5 year olds and they've...

Re: Butter free cakes
What about a swiss roll? There's no fat in a swiss roll and it's not replaced with anything, just whisk 3 eggs with 3oz of sugar and stir in 3 oz of flour. You can cook it in a more usual cake shape if you don't want to roll it.

Re: Baby slings.
I used all kinds of slings with my 2 and can honestly say I would not have managed without. They are far more useful and versatile than prams or pushchairs, but don't go for High Street slings which are pale imitations or 'real' slings in my opinion. I used pouch slings for my babies when they were ...

Re: Petrol Prices
The UK has already hit peak oil - I can't remember the exact date, and lots of other countries too - and given that the world is about to hit it, things in the world of oil, petrol and cars are going to change hugely in the next 5-10 years. Definitely best to start weaning yourself off reliance on a...

Re: Recycled baby things
I've found that the best way to be given and give away used baby and children's things is at children's groups - so places like La Leche League meetings, NCT post-natal groups, playgroups. You get to know people and they get to know you and think of you when they have appropriate items to give away.

Re: Ishness can be lonely
Yes, I definitely found that having children sorted out the ishy from the non-ishy and really forced a thick wedge between the 2. I am slowly but surely finding like-minded souls though!

Have you also thought about a Folksy shop? It's the UK version of Etsy - not sure where you're based, but if it's UK you might find it cheaper and easier in terms of postage.

Re: Banking!!
I have my personal and a community group account with the Co-operative bank. They've always been very good, no problems, no charges for credit balances. I know some people think they don't go far enough in their ethical stance but they're certainly better than the mainstream banks. Or there's Triodo...

Re: I think my SAD syndrome has lifted!
I often get SAD and have tried all sorts of things, St John's Wort certainly helped but I this year I didn't suffer at all. I used a lightbox like Julysea and it was fantastic, will certainly do the same next year. Julysea - did you find it sometimes worked a little too well and you could become a ...

Re: First early spuds are in
Soil still frozen every morning here too. I'm itching to get on with some planting but there's still too much frost and the ground only thaws for around an hour after 1pm. Brrrrr.
