Re: Allotment thefts, how can we prevent?
You can now buy a battery operated PIR that sends a text to your mobile and phones three other numbers to leave a pre-recorded message. The audible alarm facility can be switched off. Quite a few stockists list them as mini texting alarm.

Re: Allotment thefts, how can we prevent?
So sorry to hear of your break-ins HappyHippy, unfortunately we've been there, got the badge, caught the burglars. It is very demoralising but please don't let it get to you just yet. Is there any kind of pattern at all, school holidays, that sort of stuff that might point to a return visit. Are the...

Re: Courgette time again
Courgie and tom sauce for pasta, chips, fish pie etc. Slice courgies and onion and brown in a pan. Add to taste ground cumin, sea salt, garlic and black pepper then chuck in a load of freshly chopped toms. Cook it down before blitzing with a hand blender (at this stage I also add mature cheddar). Br...

Re: Chilis (I know - chilis again!)
Hungarian Hot Wax fits the bill for us. Young fruits are pleasantly fiery when eaten raw but mellow right down to almost sweet pepper status with cooking (great for stuffing the cooked shells with cream cheese and herbs). They can be left on the plant to gain heat for pickling and grow well outside ...

Re: aerobically activated compost tea
I make this in a low-tech way from home-made compost containing rabbit poo. The mix contains half a shovel of compost, two tablespoons of molasses (T8 and Lyalls black treacle) and five gallons of rain water. Whisked and stirred thoroughly every few hours until frothy (12-24hrs) then dilute for appl...

Re: Battling to prevent butterflies
I had terrible problems with butterflies last year . I was going to purchase some of that finer netting that scaffolders use to prevent debris but alas that's another item on my 'to do' list that I never got round to doing in spring. Scaffolding companies dispose of (pay for disposal of) debris net...

Re: Where is everyone?New post section perhaps?
Still here but I don't use the internet nearly as much now. Mrs CM was made redundant some time back and since then we slowed our pace of life (even further) and are having more fun together than ever; out and about in a low cost way. Our 520 sq metre allotment helps to fill gaps in the food basket,...

Re: Vertical Gardening (no, not like that ...)
Hi Mike. I know a lot of folk who swear by a back-saver spade. Not cheap but they do seem to cover the ground quickly and without the usual stresses associated with digging.

Re: Don't waste heads and feet!
Posted this before I think, but I was once served up half a rabbits head as part of a dish. I did quite fine until I got down to the inner part of the ear canal and uncovered what looked like remnants of wax and hairs. Kind of skipped over that part of the meal after that and can't honestly say I'd ...
