Re: Hatching eggs

All the eggs are developing, I just can't tell if they still are. Hatching day is Wednesday evening, or Thursday morning if hatching was delayed by the spell of no heat. Fingers crossed. We got cream legbar posted so sexing the chicks would be easy. Hopefully the fact that they have been developing ...

Re: Hatching eggs

Thanks for the reassurance. I may need to invest in a good torch. Using a head torch, they are fairly dark inside, but no real shape to the darkness. Not clear/translucent like the new eggs. This is the first time we have tried hatching eggs, so no real experience of looking inside. Should I be able...

Hatching eggs

We put some fertile eggs under a broody hen 10 or 11 days ago. She got off the eggs today at about 1pm as i was cleaning the roosts, and didn't return. I managed to borrow an incubator and they were warming back up by 4.30pm. Just wondering how much harm will have been done?

Washable 'Kushies' nappies - sale or swap

Hi, We have 20-25 Kushies washable nappies in both sizes (young baby and older baby/toddler), along with lots of unopened packets of flushable liners. These are still in good condition but are no longer needed. It would be good to see them go to a good home. We to the West of Glasgow and are happy t...

Re: smelly chicken run

Thanks for all your comments. I am wondering if it is the muddy straw in the run that is the problem. The shed doesn't smell, but we do use straw on the floor which gets mucked out into the run. I cleared all the muddy straw out or the run, and used it to mulch the front garden. The smell has gone f...

smelly chicken run

Hi, We have 6 hens in a 8 x 2m run with a shed in the middle for them to live in. With all the recent rain the smell has become really bad. We use straw as bedding, and muck this out into the coop once a month or when needed, we also put grass and hedge clipping in the run. The ground is quite water...

Re: Chickens with spider mites

We had mites over the summer and used diatomaceous earth to get rid of them. We cleaned the house out with JaysFluid (you could use a steam wallpaper stripper to kill mites in cracks). We also added crushed garilc to their water once a week. We than sprinkled the powder along the perches, floor and ...

Re: Calendula infusion

I have used marigold for lots of wounds and it speeds healing by 25%. What would normally take 8 days heals in 6. The same is true for comfrey and wounds/broken bones etc.

Re: Keeping chickens warm

I just bought a bag of 'mixed corn' to feed to the girls in the afternoon. I expected it to be corn, but it looks like wheat with bits mixed through. Is it corn (like sweetcorn) that keeps hens warm on cold nights, or will the 'mixed corn' do the same thing?

Re: Calendula infusion

Use the one you have started  Is the oil packed with petals? If not then you could use the same oil with fresh petals to make it stronger. It is fine to do it in the sun but takes longer..... (how I would love to be in tasmania not scotland right now. It has been raining here for weeks a...

Re: Impetigo - any natural cures?

It sounds like you would be best treating the reason he is run down as well as the impetigo. Echinacea would boost his immune system and chamomile is good for stress, but you may be best seeing a professional herbalist who would be able to identify exactly what he should be taking. www.nimh.org.uk h...

Re: Calendula infusion

The petals do not need to be dried, but you need to be sure that they are all covered otherwise the oil can go off. This is especially true with comfrey which tends to go mouldy. I make my marigold infused oil by picking the flower heads (not just the petals), covering them with oil and heating in a...

Nettles were used in the war to dye stuff camouflage green. I have never tried it myself - another project waiting for the right time.
