Re: Keeping Quail advice?
Will def agree with meshing the floor - we lost loads to rats in just one night - ended up having to dispatch the rest as they had all been damaged. They had only been outside for 4 days and we had spent weeks hatching and raising them. Also be careful when taking them outside for the first time - w...

Re: New chickens won't lay
Hi We hatched our own Australorps last year. They have taken 7 months before they started laying so do take longer to develop and lay as with all speciality breeds other than your basic layers. Ours started off with very small eggs aswell alythough they have got bigger over the past couple of weeks....

Re: Prolapse :-(
Hi We also had a white star who had exactly the same thing - 2 years later she is still going strong and is still a very good layer. The secret I found with the prolapse was haemorriod gel and holding the finger inside the vent for a couple of minutes as it then seemed to settle and relax. She still...

Re: Duck advice please
Hi We keep Aylesbury ducks and although they are quite a large duck they are exceptionally friendly. We hatch our own and the children handle them from day olds and now they are very friendly and eat out of our hands. The good thing with Aylesburys is they can't fly, we are very lucky to have the Ri...

Re: At what age and time of year do geese start laying eggs?
They won't lay any more eggs than if you had a gander present - obviously the only difference is they won't be fertile so nothing will hatch. When our goose was laying we kept taking a few eggs off of her for incubating and also to use for cooking as they are really nice as an omlette, scrambled or ...

Re: When can I let my chicks out?
How old are they?
If they are of age 16 weeks plus we just open the door
as long as they have spent a couple of nights in where they are going to live they will return there at dusk. then they will free range and eat bugs and stuff all around
good luck

Re: At what age and time of year do geese start laying eggs?
I know it sounds strange, it is one of the reasons that you cannot intensivley rear geese in that whilst they are monogamous and pair off all year they actually will only mate and lay eggs in the spring. Each goose will only lay about 25 eggs a year and thats your lot. The Gander at this time can be...
