a corking gun doesn't cost much. alternatively a wooden mallet and small block of hard wood could be used to whack them in, which does sound a bit dangerous.

always consult your local authority (afterall they are there to help), you never know what future plans are for the area. planning permission could be turned down and you'll be left with just grazing land. Authorities could view this as a chance to build houses going through the back door even thoug...

i cut the stems off to put on the compost heap and leave the roots in the ground to be dug in in winter. there might be a problem of passing on diseases, so burn any infected material to stop the cycle. don't worry about superficial diseases like chocolate spot, it doesn't affect the taste or the yi...

Kentish cob is the most well known and widely grown variety, but is a filbert not a cob. A cob is a dumpy nut and a filbert is more elongated

i used to go bunny bashing with ferrets when i was a kid. We used long nets as well, but were less successful. They could be re-used for growing melons in, hanging up pumpkins, storing shallots etc...

A small and simple one is to keep a bottle of water in the fridge. Water isn't wasted running the tap to get a nice cold drink. Every little helps!

Try either rubbing pennyroyal leaves releasing the oils to act as a barrier, or an insecticide can be made from pyrethrum (Tanacetum cineraiifolium) by drying and crushing the flowers. Be careful using pyrethrum, wear gloves and be sensible as it will kill beneficial insects!

hazelnuts

was wondering at what stage do you pick hazelnuts? I'm sure they don't turn brown on the trees. What can be done to preserve them as well? Any answers before the squirrels get them would be nice. Many thanks.
