Re: new chickens,feed question

Well personally I would feed the few scraps of meat - not too much like but if it's left over from today's dinner then I'd go ahead. The reason it is illegal to feed meat products to any animal in Europe is because of the BSE scare where BSE was spread as a result of feeding ground bonemeal to cattl...

Re: What are you selfsufficient in?

Well I suppose I'm self sufficient in eggs and chicken, because the surplus eggs pay for the food for the layers and the growers. Also have pigs we're fattening but they're not old enough to slaughter yet in a few months we should be sorted pork and bacon wise. We have potatoes - which seem to have ...

I'd be a Sunflower - my favourite flower ever!

I like them because they are so simple and unpretentious.

Re: Sunburnt pigs

Hi, Well I didn't call a vet in the end. Too expensive and I'm cheap  I eventually got them using the wallow and kept them in shade. I guess the texture of the mud sort of acted like a lotion and prevented them from further burning. I just wanted to let ye know it worked out ok anyway. Thanks

At what age and time of year do geese start laying eggs?

Just had a quick search around the site and couldn't see anything answering this one. I got a gander and goose a couple of days ago. They are one year old and I was just wondering when I could expect to get eggs from them. Is the the wrong time of year? I know nothing about geese - it was a bit of a...

You've inspired me to get a book on how to crochet. They are gorgeous bags. I love the first one. I might have to annoy you for tips once I get going!

Sunburnt pigs

Hi, We got two days of sunshine and the pigs are sunburned! One is particularly bad and is raw red. I made a wallow for them on the first day of sunshine but they don't seem to know how to use it - they came from an intensive farm. Now that the sun has gone she is constantly shivering and I'm not su...

Re: pig costs and advice please

Hi, I just got three pigs myself recently. They cost 45 euro each for a 10 wk old, which is a pretty good price from looking around here anyway. They do eat a lot though. Can you put them free ranging? I've had mine in a stable for 5 weeks now and am putting them out at the weekend. They eat about a...

Re: Perch height advice

I can only speak for myself but I notice that my silkie hen would have difficulty getting up to a perch that was even chicken height from the floor as she can't fly at all but all my other hens (sussex and sussex x RIR) would get on it no problem so it probable depends on the breed too.

Re: Perch height advice

Same here. My perch is about 3 inches up and then they are tiered up to about 2 feet. If they are battery hens they probably just don't get the concept anyway. My hens weren't battery but had been kept in cramped conditions. I had made lovely perches for them and had left an old chair in the shed ju...

Re: Sex changing chicken!!!!!!!!!

I have heard of this actually although I haven't seen it myself. I read that it can happen when there is no rooster with the flock so one hen takes the dominant male position. I don't suppose a rooster is an option? Great if you were ultimately planning to get chicks but I wouldn't think it an optio...

Re: IBS? (tmi in places)

I'm another one. Went into hospital like you mrs fibbles about 7 years ago and was diagnosed. I also find that taking more fibre makes that problem ten times worse. Not worth it. I was on the antispasmodics at the start but once things started to settle down I only used the colpermints. I would agre...
