Re: Compost
I found the Lidl multi purpose compost quite good this year. It's in 60lt bags for 4euro. It seems to be peat based but with a good loamy soil content in it too (supposedly this is John Innes No.2). I bought some of the Verve multi purpose from B&Q last year but thought it was poor, lots of lump...

Re: Selfsufficientish dishwasher
Hi guys a tip for anyone who must use a dishwasher, connect the hot water pipe to it instead of the cold water pipe, that way it doesn't have to heat the water when it goes in.

Re: onions bolting what can i do?
Well I cut off all the shoots with the seed heads as low down as I could. I pulled up one or two of the onions but there wasn't much of a bulb. I'm considering just pulling them up and using the space to grow something else. Or should I wait another few weeks and try to harvest them?

onions bolting what can i do?
Or at least i think they are bolting. They have a long stalk with a sort of pod on top, I presume this contains the seed. i believe this isn't good. Can anyone tell me why and what do i do now? Thanks.

Poultry Shield
Hi guys, do any of our Irish members know where I can get Poultry Shield in Ireland. I can buy it online from a few places in the UK but the delivery costs are very expensive.

Thanks Julie, I suppose we'll just have to persevere. It's not too bad anyway as long as I stay on top of it.

Re: I think I've made a big mistake
Well the dock has been finding it's way through my raised beds over the few weeks, what a pain! All I can do is pinch them out as they come through the soil or does anyone have any better ideas? It's so fast growing and the shoots go way down into the soil under my beds.

Re: Carrots how long?
Thanks guys for the replies. I had a look again today and there is something coming up now actually. The trouble is how do I know they are the carrots and not weeds? What do carrot seedlings look like. They look sort of like grass seedlings at the moment. Anyway I sowed some more today just in case ...

Carrots how long?
I think my carrots are not going to come up. I sowed the seeds 3 to 4 weeks ago and no sign of any seedlings coming up yet. How long do they take usually and should I start again?

Re: I think I've made a big mistake
Wow thanks guys that sure is a relief. Hi Julie I just got lucky with the digger, I was thinking of you when I read your thread earlier, it's back breaking work, I know i moved tons of earth a few weeks ago for another project and it nearly killed me, a digger really is worth it's weight in gold and...

I think I've made a big mistake
I've recently made some raised beds for growing vegetables. My land is covered in grasses and weeds and rather than try to get rid of the weeds I decided to try and grow in raised beds. I don't like the idea of using chemicals like weedkillers either. I got some excellent topsoil delivered yesterday...
