Re: New study published on allotment waiting lists

I'm sorry that I have no factual information about the situation in Scotland, but judging from internet traffic it sounds similar.

It does appear, however, that the Scottish Government are more interested in it and seem to be looking for solutions short of providing funding.

New study published on allotment waiting lists

We have released a report this week on a study of allotment waiting lists in England. Very briefly, the study looked at those sites managed by all of the principal English councils, and had a response rate of 99%. It showed that on average, for every 100 established plots there are now 49 people on ...

Re: Petition to provide more allotments - please sign

I agree that there should be more allotments. It seems crazy that the governemnt is pouring money into encouraging people to eat more veg and take more exercise - then if they decide to do something about it, they have to queue for years before they are allowed to start. We have just collected data ...

What to plant under trees

My local scouts have a large garden with some very large overhanging trees. They would like to plant some shrubs etc that provide edible fruit.

Anyone have any experience of this, or any suggestions please?

A Farm for the Future

I watched a programme on BBC2 last night. It's about peak oil and agriculture. It is well written, the filming is superb, and it asks really important questions. Natural World, 2008-2009 - 14. Scottish Parliament moves on allotment shortage.

The Scottish Government announced on 16/10/08 that "Unused public land could soon be made available to meet increased demand for allotments". See the story on http://www.scotland.gov.uk/News/Releases/2008/10/16130431 Anyone like to write to their (English) MP's and ask why they don't do so...

Re: Hello from Wirral

Thank you to everyone for making me feel so welcome, and for all the helpful suggestions. We have been campaigning with some success, and have tried to put together a page with useful downloads etc for others to use - http://www.transitiontownwestkirby.org.uk/accesstoallotments.htm Should there be a...

Hello from Wirral

Hi, my name is Margaret and I live in West Kirby. Our town is noted, (amongst other things) for its lenghty allotment waiting lists - 62 plots and currently 217 names on waiting lists. Still, we're developing quite a community of people interested in GYO through our local Transition Town initiative ...

campaign for more allotments

As part of our Transition Initiative we have started to campaign for more allotments locally. We have people here who have been told by the Council that they will be waiting 20 years for a plot. We have set up a web page with information on allotment legislation and planning guidance etc. and with l...
