Re: Should I oil or grease a 'skimmed' Rayburn hotplate?

I often grease mine with a knob of butter, particularly when I'm making drop scones. I think it's probably a good idea, a bit like 'seasoning' a wok.

Re: my name's .......and i'm an amazonaholic

Also guilty of amazonaholism, but often I do try to make purchases from the marketplace where I can get used items from small traders and feel good that I'm supporting recycling.

Re: My novel is on Amazon!

It's really good to get your feedback and how you interpret the story - thanks for taking the time to respond. Sometimes things have to be revised and rewritten so many times that I can miss what may seem to be something obvious to someone reading it for the first time. I just wanted to check that I...

Re: My novel is on Amazon!

Thanks, Trinder, for your feedback and also for your review on Amazon. Glad you enjoyed it. Just out of interest: the bits you wanted to give criticism about - do you mean that there were 'factual' bits I got wrong? Just wanting to check so that I can amend if that's the case!

Re: Tomatoes

Shame that every one of my plants got blight this year. Every year I dream of having a tomato glut and end up with courgettes :?

Re: My novel is on Amazon!

Hope you got it downloaded, Maggie, fascinating to hear that you were at the first Stainsby - although it's not named there is a vague reference to it later in the story. Funnily enough, it's a festival I have been meaning to go to for years (it's about 15 minutes away from where I live) but never m...

My novel is on Amazon!

Sorry for the blatant self-promotion, but I am quite excited! After a number of rejection letters, I got a literary agent at the beginning of the year who loved my book and has it currently on submission to publishers. However, they told me this week that they have also put it out on Amazon (in the ...

Re: Your favourite 'ish flavoured book

Obviously John Seymour's Self Sufficiency, but also John Seymour's 'Blueprint for a Green Planet' was way ahead of its time.

Re: 2nd hand xmas

I recently asked my 20-year old daughter if she could remember what her favourite Christmas present had been, and she told me that it was a box of books. It happened to be a year when we were utterly skint, we had no TV and most of the presents for rest of family were home-made. We got a big cardboa...

Re: Paper logs

There are instructions in the John Seymour Self Sufficiency book for making paper logs using old oil/fat. Looks like you just need an old biscuit tin!

Re: Washing clothes at 15 degrees? New product

I have been using soapnuts for the last 2 months and been amazed at the results. I wash at 30 degrees, although for a white load I wash at 40 and add a teaspoon of bicarb. Certainly won't be going back to washing powder.
