Re: Wanted: Sheep

Welcome to the DEFRA paper trail :pale: Not being funny here but to comply with the current law (as I understand it) First to keep sheep on your land you'll need to register it as an agricultural holding and be given a Holding Number Then apply for a Flock Number (That individualy identifies your fl...

Re: Get a good green?

My friend has done it before using a weld dye first, overdyed using woad. Depending on the strength of the dyes will give anything between a bright yellow-green up to a snooker table beize green.

Re: River Cottage - Hemp

Back in the days when ships used vast amounts of hemp rope for their sails it used to be grown in the "Glebe Field". Profits from the sale of the fibre provided a supplementary income for the clergy. Can't see many vicars these days subsidising their work by selling dope......... Love and...

Re: Too late for sloes...

Naff all sloes around my part of the world (Gloucestershire) they all withered and dropped off back in august. Luckily I was working near Salisbury last month (Winton area) and found plenty (picked 6lb odd in 10 minutes or so. They should still be on the bushes unless somebodies picked them even now.

Preserving sweetcorn

I seem to have overdone the sweetcorn this year and would rather save it to eat all the year round rather than pigging out on it now.
Anybody got any ideas (and tips) on how to store it?
(ps I hate relish so no recipes please  )

Re: Anyone had a frost yet?

Working down in a valley this morning (Ascott under Wychwood, Oxon), good frost on the ground, grass all white, but the ground underneath hadn't frozen. Van outside temp gauge showed a rise from 0c up to 2c as I climbed out of the valley. The old ones tales about cold air rolling down the hills are ...

Re: Household carbon must be reduced to allow more flights??????

Going back on topic. This is the logic of the madhouse, its like saying we should own more pocessions so that burglars have more to steal! The sooner the government bites the bullet and introduces fuel duty on aviation fuel the better. a) More tax income so they don't have to play the cuts game. b) ...

When they said floodlights I assumed they meant something like security lights. http://74.125.77.132/search?q=cache:xvWTR5VZTooJ:www.thesolarcentre.co.uk/pages/Solar_Security_Lights.html+solar+security+lights+uk&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk Dont think the garden lights you get at the big...

Re: Bees

Again can't comment on the world situation but from my own experience Out of 2 of my local beekeepers one lost 3 out of 14 hives last winter and the other lost 10 out of 10 (both beekeepers of decades standing). Friends hive in wales was going well when we opened it up, the supers already felt quite...

Re: Bio-Petrol?

Bio-diesel seems to be well-established now - plenty of websites telling you how to convert your dirty chip-pan oil. But what about my petrol-engined flymo? What bio-fuel will work? Alcohol? Could I theoretically ferment plant matter and distill it to make pure enough alcohol that would work in a p...

Re: In an emergency......

Bit of a late contribution but here goes. Heat: We burn 99% wood, only used a single bag of coal this year (for banking up the fire late at night during the cold snaps. We've normally got about 2 years worth of wood in store at any one time (got to allow it to season you know !) Cooking: Mains gas c...

Re: victorian farm

I'm enjoying it. But where did they live/eat/cook once the series began and before they got the cottage ready? An article in the "Radio Times" published at the start of the series mentioned that they lived in a self contained flat in the manor house refurbished using victorian furniture a...
