Re: The cellar !!

That looks like a great set up, Russ. If only I had a garage, or a cellar for that matter.

Re: Getting ready for winter

I have something very similar. It's slightly wider and is in two parts that bolt together, so I can travel with it (although I haven't felt the need to do that yet - maybe because I don't do much travelling ). It's fabulous - you can get so much more creative with colour and texture than with k...

Re: Life with no kitchen

Well, I hope you get it all fixed. I think you're just the woman for the job. Have your neighbours had similar "snags"?

Re: How do you consume your blackberries?

ina, even the folks that make the craft gins don't distil the alcohol. They buy spirit in, steam the botanicals it, and then either re-distil it or add sugar as a liqueur. (Guess who's just been on a gin tour  ). Russ, my Dad used to have a recipe called Poor Man's Brandy, which was a win...

Re: Life with no kitchen

a line of crooked sockets here and there does not come as a suitable finish Oh dear, that would drive me crazy. A few years ago we did some work and a friend put in a new double light switch, upside down! It drove me mad for years. We recently had an electric shower fitted by an electrician...

Re: How do you consume your blackberries?

Blackberry whisky, you say. Hmm. I'm not sure whether my OH would laugh or cry at that. I'm certain he'd give it a try though - at least once.

Re: What are you harvesting now?

Just chillies now, and some hydroponic lettuce. We finally got round to having a go at Christmas tomatoes in the hydroponic unit - the plants are looking very good thus far. The chillies have been very disappointing this year. Abundant but no heat - even the scotch Bonnets are mild! They're all tast...

Re: Life with no kitchen

Whatever you get, just make sure they're sturdy - and preferably with something to hold on to. Or maybe that's just me - I never deel particualrly steady even on my one step! I'd pretend it's come on with age but in truth I was never great with them.

Re: Life with no kitchen

It sounds like it's all well planned and carried out - these days that sounds very unusual.

Great news about the extra cupboard - plenty of room for fermenting/storing your harvest.

Just make sure you've got steps tall enough to reach the fuse box in case something trips!

Re: Life with no kitchen

According to the SSE website we're no longer on the "broken" list so maybe they already have! The candles etc are still out until I'm satisfied it's not going to happen again (this time round anyway). If you've got a chopping board, you can use it on your knee. I don't spend much time in the kitchen...

Re: Life with no kitchen

Up here we're prone to, fortunately occasional but, long duration power cuts. Funnily enough a lightening bolt took out the entire NW Highlands yesterday - we're currently being supplied by a generator. I dread to think what size that is, to supply an entire village! Anyway, back to your topic, the ...

Re: Nettles as Companion Plants?

I have never had a real issue with nettles, they sting at first, itch for a few minutes and then OK Lucky you. They sting at first and then leave patches of strange numb/prickly sensations, sometimes lasting for days! However, they're great for making plant food and a human spring tonic so I battle...

Re: Nettles as Companion Plants?

Well nettles grow where there's lots of nitrogen and brassicas are greedy for it too, so although their roots will be feeding at different depths they both like the conditions. You may just have hit on a novel way of protecting your brassicas, nettles don't seem to have any predators (not sure that'...

Re: Country Wines

I haven't made any wine for a while. Kit or country. We've been busy with all sorts of other things and wine making was the thing we were least successful with. Like you we had poor results from kit wines and couldn't see any point in making something so vastly inferior to professionally produced, e...
