Slugs and Snails

I read an article earlier that seemed to suggest not all varieties of slugs and snails are pests, some slugs actually eat other slugs and do not bother your lettuce at all. When I come across a slug or snail on the garden I deal with it, I do not use slug pellets. As I am dealing with slugs and snai...

Dolphin Striker

Hi. A tall ship called "The Flying Dutchman" visits Whitby periodically and I notice she has a Dolphin Striker. This is a steel rod pointing vertically down under her bowsprit. Dolphins love to ride the bow wave of any vessel that comes along unfortunately just where the Dolphin Striker is...

Grow lettuce in pop bottles

This works.....although it might just put you in A&E!!!!!!!!!!!! Firstly gather up a selection of 2 litre pop bottles and mesh bags used to hold garlic in. Cut the mesh into 2 inchish diameter discs, remove pop bottle tops and lash the mesh over the open end of the pop bottle. Just like Blue Pet...

Thickness lines

We all know heat causes expansion and cold causes contraction. This is no different with air, so if air is warm it will take up a larger space than if it is cold (dense). The thickness lines can be found on some synoptic charts and indicate the thickness (height) of 50% of our atmosphere between 500...

Re: Perfect deep fried onion bhaji recipe

Hi Maggie, I have cooked them in the oven and they are OK. It is just a matter of finding a way to make them that suits you. The main improvement for me over my previous attempts at making Bhaji is the addition of baking powder although I do also feel the combination of spices is spot on. As the tit...

Perfect deep fried onion bhaji recipe

I am a gardener not a chef but if like me you still have plenty of onions left and you like onion bhaji I would strongly urge you to try this recipe. Makes 12 to 16 bhajis which freeze perfectly. Ref chillies?. Obviously depends what type of chilli you use who is going to be eating the bhajis etc, a...

Raspberry - Autumn Bliss

My plants are producing very many more new canes than I imagine is suitable. Each plant has 20 to 30. I am wondering if I would be wise to thin these to a respectable number?

Thanks

New Pylon design

Heard it in the news we are invited to submit a fresh design for 20,000 pylons about to be built. Surely it would be a good idea to incorporate solar panels and/or windmills into the new design?

Re: QUIZ

Thanks all,

Butterfly obviously an Orange Tip.

Still some uncertainty ref the green ladybird. I have read on Wikipedia such things are virtually impossible to identify unless you are expert.

The bee is obviously a bee fly (bombyliidae) but there are many hundreds to choose from.

Re: QUIZ

Thanks chickenchargrill, Not a Tawny Mining Bee. The hairy body is correct and colour about right. The insect I saw has a different body shape (might not be a bee), it hovers perfectly as a hoverfly and has an enormous proboscis which it uses for collecting nectar while hovering. Look forward to mor...

Re: QUIZ

Thanks,

Confirm butterfly was an orange tip.

Ladybird is not shield beetle. Green ladybird was ladybird shaped, exactly same size/shape as 7 spot. Only difference it was green.

QUIZ

I have noticed 3 insects recently. Probably not rare or unusual but I would be interested to have them identified. Butterfly/moth. Very much like a cabbage white but with bright orange wing tips. Ladybird. Entirely green, exactly same colour as leaves. Hovering bee, furry, brown/ginger, about the sa...

Balloons

I understand the law has just been tightened regarding discarding litter from vehicles. How long before releasing balloons/chinese lanterns is banned?

Picked 2 up in the fields yesterday while out walking.

Re: Fuel saver tyres

Do not know how to post a link but I emailed Which who responded and put a link in their reply. It appears this is old news. The link is to a BBC article dated 25 Nov 2009.

http://www.news.eu.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8379490.stm

Can anyone trace this & put a link?

Thanks
