Re: What is being self sufficient?

for me self sufficiency is more a state of mind than how much of your own food, fuel etc you produce. It's a desire to be as reliant upon your own resources as you possible can.

Re: I can't work without a car? Really? So annoyed

OOh it irritates me too! What if i couldnt drive for medical or other reasons? I never thought about looking into the legality of whether they can advertise for drivers only....then again, its not such a good interview technique - asking them why theyre discriminating,... then they'd say that you w...

Re: I can't work without a car? Really? So annoyed

pretty much every job I've seen advertised in the conservation sector requires you to have a driving licence. Never seen one that requires you to have your own transport tho. Always makes me wonder how they'd cope without oil tho. At work the first instinct seems to be to get a oil based solution to...

is that £1.99 for one cane? If so it seems expensive to me, especially for something you don't know the provenence of.

Re: How long to season firewood

Make a fire of Elder tree, Death within your house will be; That's a worry - anyone know why Elder comes with such a dire warning? apparently, elder was the wood that the crucifiction cross was made from. Also, Judas hanged himself from one. How true this is I don't know. What I do know is that bur...

Re: Please vote: Is re-use good for the economy?

reusing (and reducing consumption) is bad for the growth economy. If we had a different economic model then maybe resuing would be good for it. Won't know till we get there.

Re: The Uniqueness of Ish?

not knowing what those other forums are I couldn't say. One thing I have noticed is that these self suffciency type forums are much less active than some other types. Guess that's cos everyone is so busy working their plots they don't have time to spend all day on the internet talking.

Re: The Uniqueness of Ish?

not unique to here at all, I know of several forums where people also chat on facebook and the like . On one forum a bunch of us meet up every month or so in real life as well. Tis quite common in my experience.

Re: The UK is in Recesssion

we'll see an increase in crime and probably civil unrest. We'll also see an increased interest in cheap forms of energy, i.e. coal and so on. They'll also be an increase in lower standards in animal farming as people demand cheap food.

Re: Is there a simple (and very cheap) way to make raised beds

you can do deep beds without having to put wood around the edge. On my plots I have 6 raised beds that are very productive. In the Self Sufficient Gardener John Seymour gives a very good method for digging them.

Re: Do/could you live without a credit card? Is this a goal...?

MikeM, can I just suggest you let this go now? You are getting nowhere with it except perhaps the dubious pleasure of having the last word. I'm not interested in the last word at all. I am, however, interested in knowing why the mods decided to "chastise" me for behaviour that was far mil...

Re: Do/could you live without a credit card? Is this a goal...?

I'm so glad a mod decided to step in. Tho I noticed you were all rather quiet in another thread when namecalling and character questioning were going on. Do those rules about considering the feelings of others only apply to certain posters? Mods can not be expected and indeed it is unreasonab...

Re: Do/could you live without a credit card? Is this a goal...?

MikeM - you might want to take a minute and read the guidance on how we work here, and what we expect of our members - your general attitude towards others is occasionally offensive and can I ask you politely to consider others feelings when posting responses. I'm so glad a mod decided to step in. ...
