Re: Turnips!

I am starting to feel quite sorry for turnips, all this hatin'. Personally I prefer them to swede.

Putting them in pasties is a good idea, actually. I usually just roast mine or mash them with carrots like PatR does.

Turnip juice?

Re: For those of you with children in school...

Well, we've joined the StoryLab thing at the library - took out three books yesterday and he whizzed through them, so that's good - I really want him to read for enjoyment, not just consider it 'work', so that was great. He's at that age where his eyes light up when he works out a long word by break...

Re: (Very) Down in the Dumps

I need to move to France. Anyone need a servant girl? We had a temporary panic at the polytunnel at the community garden today when a member told us she thought the tomatoes had blight, but it looks more like mottled older leaves caused by a lack of magnesium. My heart did very nearly stop for a mom...

Re: ... get rid of mare's tail?

We've done a bit of experimentation at the community garden and the 'nipping it / burning it off as it comes up' seems to be just as effective as the glysophate that the golf club next door use. It certainly does seem to weaken over time. Still a pain in the backside, though!

Re: Accidents & Cleaning - Potty Training Q

What are your sofa and carpet made of? We used to cover our sofas with a throw so if there was an accident it was just a case of washing the throw. We have a nylon-based carpet (not my choice but my landlord's) which is a darkish red and I was always concerned about the colour coming out of it if sc...

Re: What are you havesting

I may need to pick your brains about the polytunnel. I only have a tiny bed in the communal polytunnel - I think it's roughly 5ft by 2ft but there is a lot of space left in the polytunnel because most of our members haven't been interested in an indoor bed, and we just build them 'to order'; so I su...

Re: Slugs slugs slugs !!!!

I'm not imagining it / over exaggerating it, am I? This year has really been horrendous for them. My mother has forty odd years gardening experience, and even she says that she cannot ever remember a year like it. The worse culprits in our raised bed are these small, white buggers. I don't know if t...

I like to decapitate the ba$tards. I put their little dead heads on cocktail sticks as a warning to their friends.
