Re: Preserving garlic

Pickled garlic is wonderful. It loses it's potency and you can eat them whole. Yum. Never done it myself though!

Mozzarella is made in a very similar way. Chop it up and server with basil & tomato!

[lurk mode off!]

When I read this I thought you was talking about car alternators, rather than cycle dynamos. It seems to me an alternator would be great for a wind turbine as these should have the regulators etc to charge a 12V battery.

Hi Andy and Shirlz, I use T***o value stuff off the shelf, not in the fridge and have had no problems. The ingredients say that there is only apple juice in there... I think is all they generally do with apple juice is pasteurise to preserve? I've made reasonable cider with value apple juice too. T...

I also remember the Millenium panic. Folks were fighting over food supplies in the shopping centres trying to prepare for the 'end of technology as we know it'... abusing store staff.... all for nothing. January one rolled around ... It does annoy me a bit when people say 'nothing happened'. I work...

My girlfriend's dad used to be a sargent in the Grenadier guards. She remembers being taken out as a kid with her sister (this was probably Germany) and her Dad told the young soldiers to collect conkers. Apparently they had hundreds!

Anyone here ever made sauerkraut? Never tried making it but the process sounds interesting. You use natural lactose producing bacteria to ferment the cabbage, giving a pickled taste.

Just a bit of water in the bottom of the saucepan is enough, maybe an inch or so, just be sure it doesn't run dry (you did read the 8 hour bit right :-). It doesn't matter if the puddings are in contact with the water - you can stack them. Make sure your saucepan/steamer is sealed and use the lowest...

Re: Christmas cake and pudding

Hi Clarabel, Thanks for the reminder! Below is the recipe I use. I use it every year, but no idea where it came from. Normally I use my 3 Gallon brew pot to steam 'em, but the flat I just moved into has only got an electric cooker. Not sure how it'll work. In the past I've used 2 large saucepans or ...

There should be no problem with plastic - as long as you only storing the wine in it for a short time (i.e. the few weeks it takes to ferment before you bottle). 99% of beer homebrewers ferment in plastic without problems. Come to think of it my 5 Gallon plastic primary has pictures of wine bottles ...
