Up until now I have been using a small cat litter tray (unused, I hasten to add) as a mould and then cut the soap up into rectangles. But it never looks that neat. I don't like the moulds you can buy much as they are a bit twee and lose that 'hand made' look. I was browsing a book in the library and they had a picture of a wooden rectangular mould, which had a criss cross of wooden battens so that you wouldn't have to actually cut the soap - it would just end up in nice, neat rectangles.

I have googled with no success. Anyone have any idea where I might buy something like this?

Its a loaf mould. Search using soap loaf mould and you should find one!

the cutting bits are a separate bit of kit. i did know the proper name for it, but i can't remember now...i think its a birt of hardware kit - is it a mitre? for sawing corners?

I've never made soap so I might be totally off track here, but could you use margarine tubs? The rectangular tubs that cream cheese comes in would be a perfect size. Ask around or request on freecycle for them.

Yep, they're great for single bars. I've used those takeaway tubs too, but if you want to make really neat handcut bars, then a loaf mould is the way to go.

However...i just made 6 salt bars using a box from some packaging lined with cling film. A shoe box will work too.

I also use cartons - juice cartons are great, and i use pringles tubs too -they make a really nice sized round.

What about tetra-pac carton, would that be the right dimensions?

Pringles tubs! What a great idea! I will try to gather some up at Christmas. Someone is bound to be eating some! I actually bought a mould that shape but it is crap and leaks.
