I have just won on Ebay auction a Readers Digest book called Back to Basics. It has all those wonderful things in it that our Nanas used to do in there simple self sustaining lives and how to do them. Can't wait to get it in the post I have been chasing it for what seems like forever. YIPPEE YIPPEE YIPPEE
Sorry got a bit excited there.

I love this book! Look in it lots of time. Bought it at a church fair for 2 euros!
My oldest daughter Laura looked in the book and said: oh mom we don't need to buy a little farm, we only have to buy some land and build our house ourselves....

I love the old books- we think we're the first lot of ishers! no way! look back to some of the years during the war they called it 'thrift' or 'make do and mend'. Different name many of the same ideas. I found a site with all the dig for victory leaflets which were still relevant and interesting today. They even had to consider food miles, as being an island shipping stuff in could be a bit dicey and risked mens lives-so essentials only, no long haul flights or articulated lorries hurtling down motorways (er, no motorways!)
I often think about trying to live on 'rations' for a week or two, supplemented with what you grow/forage/catch yourself........maybe we could do a sponsored event to raise funds for the site........you never know.....

kind thoughts
