My new house was mostly carpeted... and that is now mostly gone  I HATE carpets. Anyways these carpets were dirty dogified stinky manky bits so no turning into rugs or freecycling (well not as 'carpets' anyway)

1. use to cover the ground that is just about to get dug up as a veg patch, to kill the grass and mark out the plot for you (worked a treat - till I found previous owners garden path 2 inches under said grass  )

2. Use to cover compost heap when leaving it to age or ferment or whatever its called.

3. Use to tack to a wall, or tack to a barrel, or any large object for your cat to use as a scratching post (I know one man who runs a healthy business recycling carpet this way).

4. Give to your local handyman painter to use as painting sheets (one painter happily took several large sections of carpet from me for this).

5. Use inside walls or ceilings as insulation? (Not sure if this would work or not).

6) Use as the layer of padding under the waterproof membrane on a 'green' roof.

When making a garden pond using liner, place carpet over sand, under the liner, to help protect the liner from being pierced by sharp objects. It also helps to add a layer of insulation at the lower depths of the pond during the cold months.

put a section down underneath the swimming pool ladders (an above ground pool) so you don't tread loads of crap into the pool on your feet
