Hello all,
I called my local council yesterday and put my name on the waiting list for an allotment, sadly it is going to be approximately 9 years before I could get one. I am so surprised, has anyone any suggestions on other ways of finding an allotment? Are they only available through councils? I live in Stirling, Scotland.

You could try finding out where the allotments are and going down there in person. In our area each allotment site is overseen by different people (although they're all council owned), and I somehow managed to wangle myself a slightly overgrown plot, despite there being a waiting list.

I think it was because I was so overwhelmingly enthusiastic about cultivating the plot as soon as possible and getting my veggies in, that they took a shine to me! It seems that a lot of people put their names on the list, but are a bit half-hearted about the whole idea. So I would say, show your face (and enthusiasm!), get to know the allotment manager and be prepared to perhaps take on a plot that might require a bit more work.
