comfrey

someone has given me a cutting of a comfrey plant which I want to plant on my allotment but I only have a tiny plot and wonderedif I could plant this in a tub, I'm told it has very long roots that get the nitrogen up from deep in the soil, so perhaps a pot would defeat the whole object. I don't know how much room it would take up...any advice would be most welcome

I kept some comfrey plants in a tub for a year or so, as a temporary meaure, and they were quite happy. I've now moved them, but whether they will like their new site is another matter!

As you say, the main point is that their deep roots bring up minerals other plants can't reach. Perhaps you could contain them in a bottomless container, so that they can spread down but not get out of control?

good idea the I guess it is the same principle as is suggested with mint to keep that under control.

thanks, folks, that is a brilliant idea, especially as I have just cut the bottoms out of a pile of black buckets which the local florist gave me free, I was intending to grow tomatoes in them in my new(ish)( well, ok second hand ) greenhouse when I put the glass into it next week. But I will reserve one for comfrey ( and another one for my mint, which is spreading everywhere)
