the family and myself were diagnosed as lactose intollerant last year and so switched our dairy to soya, rice, hazelnut etc, then discovered Arla's AMAZING lactofree range. along with the milk, mild cheese and lately CREAM (WOOOOO!!) they make flavoured yogurts, but not plain ones.

the only thing is, we like things like tandoori chicken, naan breads etc and I still have to use soya yogurt in these; although it's an ok substitute isn't great...

I was thinking I could use whole Lactofree to make a proper cow's milk yogurt, but I'd need a starter of some form.
what could I use that's NOT normal bio yogurt?
would the soya bio yogurt (Yofu) work do you think?

Should I just go my normal route and experiment until I get it right?!

Soya yoghurt works just fine - my gal has some vegan "chicken" pieces and we regularly make chicken tikka.

I don't think it's live, Mrs F. But I bought some vegan yoghurt starter on Fleabay to make yoghurt for the gal (still in the freezer somewhere!

Someone will shout if I'm wrong - but I would have thought (from a basis of zero knowledge) that the lactose is already present in the cows milk. Unless whatever is in the soya yoghourt (which doesn't contain any lactose at all as far as I know) actually breaks lactose down, I'd say the answer to your question is no.

But I know nothing!!!

Lactose-free milk???!!!???!!!!!

Off to google (the font of all knowledge)

Mike

EDIT: Have done the google. You were, of course, kidding, Maggie

OK - you can buy lactose-free milk - but it's been messed about with in that lactase is added to pre-metabolise the lactose. So now I know. So, Flib, it might work if you use lactose-free milk, but then Maggie says that soya yoghourt is inert anyway. I'm now getting confused and shall shut my gob and watch developments
