I have an old breadbin, the oblong wooden type. I have hay. I have fabric scraps in abundance.... using the instructions in the bible, I'm planning on some haybox cooking... but just need to know, will the box be suitable?
it's kinda like this one:

Seems like an awfully nice box to use for a haybox... It really depends on the pot you're going to use inside it - you want it to be big enough that there's at least 2 inches of insulation all the way around, preferably more. It's something I've been meaning to make for ages...

it is a lovely box, and I don't think I can get 2" of insulation in and still have room for a bowl or pan lol... so I'll have to think of another use. it's not good as a bread bin. similar to the one in the picture, but made out of crappier wood and without a lid handle...

Make it into a pretty box for the kids to store pens or something?

Dear Mrs F,
In the past I've got schoolkids making hayboxes from big cardboard boxes and the packaging that books come in. They were very effective at cooking veggie soups, porridge, rice etc. and the kids had a good time enhancing their understanding of science. Why not try practicing with temporary hayboxes until you can get a more permanent wooden box? Make sure that everything you put in has been boiling for a few minutes before consigning to the interior and remember that it takes a few hours to cook through, experiment and practice will ensure best results,
Love and Peace
Jim

thanks jim, I will. I have an el cheapo coolbag which I line with a fleece blanket to use for proving bread so I'm sure it's work as a haybox! I am thinking of doing a ground rice pudding as the first thing, but for today the oven will be being used as I've been nagged for pizzas and a loaf lol.
