Hi all

New to self-sufficiency and would like to buy a small greenhouse. Does anyone have any advice on the best make and what you think is a reasonable price?

Thanks

If you buy new, you'll find thatb the best deal will be an 8' by 6' from B and Q or similar, wooden ones are nicer to look at,but very expensive. If you're not into too much work ,buy a base as well, but if you are,you can get a second hand GH one round here for £50 or less, but you might well have to dismantle it your self,if you do buy new glass clips when you reassemble (BandQ again for pennies).Having said all that, have you thought about a small polytunnel? Best Wishes.

FWIW I'd recomend you DON'T buy one of those little plastic type "greenhouses" that are about 2ft by3ft by 5 ft tall because they only last a year if you are lucky.

If you are handy with tools why noty have a go at making a small one ? After all a cold frame is a very small greenhouse with solid sides. We have one glass shop in my town so he hasa monopoly on the price but for a 60cmx60cm or 24"x24" pane of greenhouse glass he charges £3.50 so you could build a 4ft wide x 2ft deep by say 6ft tall for 14 or 20 panes of glass and a few bits of wood.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I've ordered a polytunnel from Morgan and Thomspon and will look at freecycle too. Not sure I'm quite ready to build my own but as I gain experience might be tempted as my compost bin seems to be holding up at the moment.

Your so right, I tried the small cheap plastic things - what a waste of time and money. If there is a small gust of breeze it will turn over, or wieghed down well probably rip. Even here in Cambridgeshire in my very sheltered garden one lasted almost a year. Seems they may be useful inside a greenhouse for extra heat??!!
