we celebrate both xmas and yule in our house, yay two lotsof presents hahahaha.
from jim this year i got two pairs of dressmaker's shears; big, sharp scissors.one pair is a proper set of fabric scissors, carbon steel with forged handles and an adjustable hinge ♥ but i think best of all is the other pair.
they're an antique pair of 1930s pinking shears. made by Singer, made from high quality metal complete with forged handles and they're in their original box. obviously well cared for cos they're still sharp! on the back of the box is some messy ink writing and it says "to my darling daughter, christmas 1951". now, in 1951 rationing was still in full swing for some things and the country was gripped by austerity cos we were basically broke after WW2; therefore metal objects were still very hard to come by for most people, and so these must have been as treasured a gift then as they are now... obviously this mother passed on her pinking shears to her daughter, which is a lovely, well made, practical gift.
i know. i am gushing. they're beautiful and i love them. they'll be equally as well used and cared for by me.

They sound wonderful - clearly given with love on both occasions! You lucky lady!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Re: the greatest xmas gift
What a fantastic and thoughtful present - may they give you years of faithful service, and may you make many fantastic things with them. Doesn't it make you wonder what wonderful 50s fabrics they might have cut up in the past?
One of my favourite presents ever was a writing box that used to be,long to my great great uncle - he had fought on the Somme, so I only ever knew him as a very old man. But having something that used to be his, cared for and well-used, was very special.

They sound fab, Mrs F, a very personal, well thought out gift!
I've got my mothers old pinking shears although I rarely use them (my old needlework teacher told us they were the devil's spawn - or something like that!
