A plum tree that I planted 3 years ago has failed to come alive this year and looks dead. No other signs of damage - about 2 metres tall. Do cold winters kill trees? If not what else could it be? It was fine last year !

We have a similar problem, Dave. We have 2 plum trees, one is hanging on but looking quite sickly - not much in the way of buds. The other is stone dead. Both are new, one has been in for 2 years and the other we put in last year, but it's the older one that's died.

Last spring, after it was flowering, we had a sudden sharp drop in temperature for a few days and all the flowers fell off. I'm thinking that, in conjunction with the prolonged really cold weather, is whats seen it off. It's also in an area that gets the full force of the wind.

Not much help to you, I'm afraid, but I'll watch for any advice too I was wondering whether to move the other one or if that will just kill it too.

Can't be too much help - but the plum tree which decided to fall to bits last year has a mere one branch left, and it's already bloomed. If yours hasn't even got leaves, I wouldn't hold out too much hope. Sorry to be so negative.

I would go with MKG, sorry but mine has been in full bloom and is leafing so it doesn't look too hopeful for yours.

I have 2 other plum trees that are all leafy and blossomy so I guess this one has had it.

not even much use as firewood !
