Update and a wee skite - brewing

I just scored 5, 4.5 L demijohns for NZ$40 - $8 each is a wicked cool bargain! Additionally one of them is dark brown glass so i can brew Gooze-beet wine or similar and not have to worry about loosing colour

My fig wine smell beautiful - like a desert wine made from botrisized grapes(noble rot)- MKG you say fig wine no good? did yours smell like petrol as well as taste like it?

My peach wine has turned into cloudy rocket fuel - i probably should have actually sterilized it after brewing my carrot whisky (pushed up to around the 20% mark according to my hydrometer and a wash calculator) I think the beach will end up tasting like brandy(ish) once it has mellowed a bit.

I am racking my Pyder (perry cider mix) into a demi-john today - i want to knock this one on its head soon and keep the booze content low for a change!

This will empty my large stainless primary again so i will kick off a load of black berry and elderberry wine!

Yehaaaa - i love the sound of my 'johns bubbling away - i'll have to tune each one to a different note :thumbright:

Well, I did comment on fig wine. Perhaps it would be better to say that MY fig wine was no good - although I can't see, really, how I could improve it. Maybe the Italians know what they're doing when they turn it into grappa.

It did smell very hydrocarbon-ish, yes. It all turned out a really unappetising colour and was, basically, rough as old boots. Maybe if I'd had a very sweet and pale over-flavoured wine to spare, it would have blended well. :dontknow:

So, I hope yours turns out well - if it does, let me into the secret, please

No worries mike, I gave mine a chemical kick to the head yeasterday and racked it into one of the new johns - I didn't want it getting too insanely high in alcohol. I'll keep you posted of developments on this thread :salute:

Oh well - I have to ask. I was hoping someone else would ask.

What's a wee skite? (Well, I already know wee ...)

Dear Frozen .....

If you want to keep red wines colour but have only clear demijohns, wrap them in a couple of largish, brown, paper bags or keep them in a dark cupboard until they're ready. You probably aready know this but .... just in case .....

Love and Peace
Jim
