I'm thinking of building a small loft out on the flat roof at the back of my house, by small I mean no more than 6-7ft high, and around 4ft wide by maybe 8ft long. Intending to ideally leave it fairly open so the birds can come and go as they please, and only wanting to use them for meat/eggs. The roof in question is atop a single storey extension on the back of the house so the total height of the loft will stay below the gutter level of the main house.

So what possible legal issues could I run into with this setup? Will I need council permission? will there be any licence problems involved? the animals will only be eaten by myself and the OH so I should be free from slaughter restrictions, just a little vague about the rest.

Unless you live in a conservation area, have already had a big extension to the original house, or the structure is within 45deg sight line from your neighbours window, it should be within Permitted Development and not require planning permission.

As to whether the Environmental Health officer would have any comments I don't know, but I think they can only intervene if a nuisance is caused.
