Used to have kids, but we rehomed them!
Do the spiders in my house count? They all have names.
Then there's the greys of course, plus several tropical fish, only one of which has a name. (He's called Stephen 'cos he's a fry!...)

If it isn't a Greyhound, it's just a dog!

Just the useless poodle. Or maybe I should include all of the garden birds, because we spend an awful lot of time making them comfortable. And if I include them, I'll have to include the red-haired mice and the voles (and yes, they're Victor and Valerie, although I'm sure that the original V&V must be long dead). And the frogs, for whose sake I have a special lawnmower setting. That's about enough, I think.

Quite a few pictures of Minnie on my Flickr page.
Hint: She's the little furry thing helping herself to my leeks!

(PS. I have failed too many times at imbedding a photo into my posts. So I have given up for the sake of sanity)
PPS I am also the foster parent of a red-eared slider (turtle) called Dora.

Our remote ancestors said to their mother Earth, "We are yours."
Modern humanity has said to Nature, "You are mine."
The Green Man has returned as the living face of the whole earth so that through his mouth we may say to the universe, "We are one."

Re: what pets do you have
Big Al, that sounds about right, most greys make it well into their teens. Most of them are retired from racing at 3-5 years old. The vast majority of the 8000 per year in the UK are put down after their racing days are over. Such a crying shame when they make such adoring, loveable and easy pets.
People think they need alot of exercise, which they really DON'T. Greys are sprinters, not marathon runners. One walk of about 1/2 a mile is fine. (Your average Collie needs 12 miles a day to keep healthy!) They are less likely to set of alergies too, as the have no fur, just a top hair layer. So they need coats in cold weather, but they shed far less.
Oooopps, turned into a rehoming ad, sorry.

Re: what pets do you have
we had bred a couple of 266 m sprinter champions and a 640 m champion along with many 460m runners. Ours loved nothing better than to be let off the lease in the god forsaken dawn mornings at 4 or 5 am on the local beach / golf course / area where all the rabbits lived. It was a pleasure to see such graceful animals twisting and turning on the scent of a rabbit which sometimes they caught, mostly they didn't but we had permission off the golf course owners to help keep the rabbit population down.MuddyWitch wrote:Big Al, that sounds about right, most greys make it well into their teens. Re: what pets do you have
I've got Renton, a black-and-white bruiser of a cat who I got in the second half of the nineties, and Sieleidgh ("Sheely", based on the Gaelic for the "Gid Folk"), who's a three year old border collie, and just as smart as you'd expect of the breed. It was a long process to help her be relaxed and friendly with pretty much anyone but me - they're a one-man breed by nature - but now she's the friendliest little social butterfly, even if she's not exactly tame. There's still just a bit of the wolf in the breed.
First thing in the morning she's queuing up to get out the door and run around, and she'll happily only come in when it gets dark. The wife takes her down to the beach for a few hours every other day while I'm at work. She's a canine battery: full of energy.
By the time she was a year old i was able to start taking her and her littermate (who i look after sometimes) up mountains: their record was about 35km and five munros in a day, but they probably did double the distance and half the height again. Only time I've seen them both shattered for 24 hours.
One good thing about border collies is that it only took telling them once to stay out of the veggie patch and they got the hint!
Anyway, her and her sister:
