Potato Fruit

This year I noticed some fruits on one of my potato plants. Now I am aware that potatoes are in the same family as tomatoes (and deadly nightshade) and that the fruits of the potato are poisonous (containing Solanine) but I had up until this year actually not seen a potato fruit! Generally it would seem the plant flowers, and either the potatoes are dug up before the plant has chance to fruit or the plants just don't fruit.

Anyone else get some potato fruit this year?

Yeah, I first noticed the fruit on the ground and presumed someone had thrown a tomatoe there... but then I realised there was more growing on the plant!! - silly really, as I'd always thought potato plants would fruit ... but as I'd never seen it before it took be a back a bit when I saw the fruits for the first time.

Dear Grahoom,

Always get some on the maincrop but rarely on the earlies. Must be due to the amount of time they're in. The fruits do look like tomatoes so it's probably wise to keep them well away from children SusieGee,

It all depends upon the variety - some don't even flower (and so no fruit), which I've always found strange.

we usually have them - we gather them carefully when we dig the spuds, to stop future spuds where we dont want them.

We get them on main crop too. They tend to go on the bonfire or in the bin.
