Not sure if this is the right place but....

I have used a sawn up tree to make stepping stones across the garden. They have been in place now for about 9 months. I noticed today that one of them that is partially covered by the leaves of a lupin is growing a fungus. Not one I've seen before. It is about the size of an edible mushroom but is white and shiny.
Does anyone know what it might be?
And, more important, should I get rid of the log? There are no trees near it, only flowering plants.

This is almost certainly the very aptly named Poached Egg Fungus.
It usually prefers beech trees, so if your sawn up tree was a beech tree then that would confirm it.
Not edible, but not poisonous either, could be a bit slippery though if you trod on it on your stepping "stones".

Yes, they are beech logs. What a lovely name! I have now killed off the mushroom bits with salt but I guess it is still in the logs and will no doubt appear again.
Good to hear it's not poisonous so I can keep the logs.
