perlite - should I grab it

I've asked this on another forum as well, so sorry to those of you who may be reading it for a second time.
I've never bothered with perlite, simply because I didn't know what it was. However, seeing two huge sacks of it at the edge of someone's allotment with a notice on saying 'please take some, it's going soon' prompted me to check it out. So far, all I've read makes it seem quite a good option. But as I have to act fast before the stuff gets chucked, I thought I'd ask for some quick opinions on here. Should I get it to help with my heavy clay soil and perhaps mix with my compost for seedlings?
