Ballot papers arrived
Ballot papers arrived the other day and wondering who deserves my vote.
I am thinking Green Party.
Are we alowed to discuss this?
If so, what/who is everyone else going for?
I have everyone to choose from from the usual big three to "United Kingdon First", "Jury Team" and "The Roman Party"!!! (Whoever they are)
Did look for other thread on this briefly and couldnt find one. Sorry if this is already being discussed.

Re: Ballot papers arrived
I'm just annoyed because I registered for a postal vote in the UK about 3 years ago and so far I haven't yet been able to vote at all - I was under the impression I could vote in European Elections and was hoping to get to vote for the Mayor (as I'm registered at my last address which is London) but - nada.
So there had better be a general election soon as in another year I'll have been out of the country 15 years and will be disenfranchised completely! I know I can register to vote for European and mayoral elections here in France but it's general/presidential elections that I really want to vote in.

i am unsure who to vote for, i have been reading the manefesto leaflets and everyhting but they dont seem to say anything about their views, only the usual "vote for me 'cos i rule" crap.
the BNP leaflet got used as kindling.

As a teacher I thought that the greens had a pretty good sounding education policy, which is one of the reasons I have gone for green.

I went for green. Realistically I don't think the UK could pull out of the EU anyway, so that didn't put me off too much, and I am so sick of every other party sidelining the environment that I didn't even bother looking into any of their other policies

Re: Ballot papers arrived
I got ballot papers !!!
First time I've had the opportuntiy to vote since, er, I think when John Major got in possibly, anyway I voted for the Greens because...... one of the people listed had my maiden name and one of them had my married name.
I have absolutely no idea who any of the gazillions of parties and independant people are (other than the 3 main parties) or what their policies are. If it was a general election I'd have voted for the England party (or whatever they are called) cos I think England should have its own national identity and not just get lost within Britain!!! But what use is that in Europe? I don't know how European elections work or how MEPs from all differing parties who don't see eye to eye and never will can work together on behalf of the UK in Brussels.?
Mostly I enjoyed looking at the list of 8 names under each party and noting how they all had a token Indian/Pakistani name and a token Middle Eastern name, with the odd Pole or Greek thrown in, except surprisingly enough, the BNP!
Anyway next year I'll (have to) register for a European vote in France so I'll be even more confused!
The election is on the 7th here in France though.

Yes I agree with you Brij! I am of the feeling that the environment comes first......because if we don't look after that then nothing else will be relevant anyway. Simplistic but it's the subject closest to my heart although it often gets me into arguments (i.e. how can you put what *might* happen in 100 years before whether people have jobs kind of arguments). So I try to avoid discussing politics. However, everyone on this board is friendly so it's easier to discuss here I find.Brij wrote:I went for green. Re: Ballot papers arrived
hmm, can someone tell me if there is a "hang all the politicians from lamposts, cos the trees are too good for them" party?
looking at the placards in my local town, the parties can be summed up as "oui, non, oui, oui et non, non, eh bah non, peut-etre", how is anyone supposed to be able to choose? And i've just heard that back in blighty the liberals are infront of labour.
so, whens the revolution coming, and how can i help?

Re: Ballot papers arrived
I get very het up about elections and people not voting. In my view, it's not just a right, it's our responsibility to do it. I've voted in every single election since I turned 18.
Having said that, I do think there ought to be a 'none of the above' box. If there were, that would force the greedy conniving b*ggers to get themselves sorted out, and force them to give us policies we support and candidates we trust.
In our local elections, we have a choice of Labour, Conservative, LibDem and BNP. No independents. No Green Party. So the Lib Dems will get my vote - purely because the others were automatic 'No's...

Re: Ballot papers arrived
I feel a bit like you my lovey horse,
Its a bit of a feminist thing really, I think women died so I can vote so I am bl**dy gonna use it!
Also I feel that there is always the argument a vote for one party is a vote against another. So even voting for a party that I dont nescessarily support is better than not voting at all if it stops my most hated parties from getting into power.

Re: Ballot papers arrived
I'm surprised that the Green Party is against the EU as it seems to me to be the best way to get a green agenda implemented across the biggest trading partner in the world. If the EU refused to allow non-green goods into the European market, America and China would have to change there manufacturing ways or lose serious amounts of money. If the regulations for goods made within the EU and goods imported into the EU were the same then it would be fair and equal, no distortion of the market or tariffs etc. But would make real change! This could also be used to implement a universal carbon tax for example.
Re: Ballot papers arrived
You got to remember though that the EU is a synonym of Bureaucracy, each EMP has one minute to voice his opinion on a subject, and the framework is a relic of the 70's french system, not to mention the people, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing for one.I'm surprised that the Green Party is against the EU as it seems to me to be the best way to get a green agenda implemented across the biggest trading partner in the world
For true ecological devellopment, you could either go for the 'united in diversity' idea, held by the EU, or the 'the system's so heavy that we might as-well go it alone' idea. I'm not saying that this is the Green Party's agenda, but its logical.
