Cleaning glass on combustion heater

I'm sure I saw a post recently where someone asked how to clean the glass on their combustion heater, but I can't find it now.
Anyway, I saw it on an old episode of How Clean is Your House? the other day;
Scrunch up newspaper and dampen slightly
Dip damp paper in the ash from the combustion heater and use to scrub glass. Rinse & dry

It works because ash is a actually a strong alkali. Commercial prepartions use caustic soda; ash is clearly a more "ish" option. But it is worth remembering that strong alkalis corrode most kinds of glass, so the rinsing step is important.

Thanks for this. It was me that posted the original post that you can't find. I'll give this a go and let you know.
Cheers
